NEW ULM — A large silver maple tree at 400 S. Minnesota Street was blown down early Friday morning during the powerful thunderstorm that struck the area.
No one was injured from the downed tree and no homes were damaged from the fall, but it was a significant loss to the neighborhood. The silver maple was one of the oldest trees in the community. Owner Brad Reinhart said the tree was estimated to be 110 years old.
The exact time the tree fell over is unknown, but it likely fell during the storm that began around 2 a.m. Friday. Strong winds were reported with the storm, reaching speeds of over 55 mph. Heavy rain also fell during the storm. Area rain gauges reported just under two inches of rain. There were also reports of hail.
The fallen tree at 400 S. Minnesota was the most significant loss to the storm, but other smaller trees and branches were lost during the storm. Fallen trees and other debris was reported in Lafayette and Sleepy Eye.
