Planning Commission OKs Rec Center variance

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Planning Commission unanimously approved a variance allowing an additional 185 square feet of exterior signage to the newly constructed Recreation Center addition Thursday.

Action came on a motion by Commissioner Larry Mack, seconded by Dave Munson to allow for a total of 700 square feet of signage on the property.

“The signage is already up. It looks good to me,” said Munson.

Park and Recreation Director Tom Schmitz said the variance request was before the commission due to a misunderstanding between the architectural and construction firms and the City of New Ulm regarding signage.

The Park and Recreation Dept. added three new signs to the new Recreation Center addition on two sides of the building.

Two new signs read “New Ulm Recreation Center/Turner Gymnastics Academy” signs facing north and east and measure 174 square feet. One 11 square feet sign reads “Willkommen” above the entrance to the new addition, facing north.
