Raising the Flag

Denny Muchow of Lafayette was chosen to raise the American flag during the national anthem at the June 9 game between the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees. Muchow was in the U.S. Navy from 1964-67, earning the rank of E-4 Navigator. He completed his submarine training at New London, Conn. He served on the USS Stonewall Jackson, a ballistic missile sub out of Pearl Harbor during the Vietnam conflict. The Muchows’ youngest son, Dana, followed his father’s footsteps and is a captain in the U.S. Navy. The Twins created the Amed Forces Flag Raising program in 2010. Each year the Twins ask for nominations of veterans to raise the flag before each game. The program pays tribute to veterans and active duty military men and women from Twins territory during the singing of the national anthem prior to each home game.
