SE man cleared in child endangerment case

NEW ULM — Brown County District Court Judge Robert Docherty dismissed a child endangerment case against Jeffrey R. Krenz, 39, of Sleepy Eye on May 7.

Krenz’ lawyer Tom Beito of Minneapolis asked the court to throw out the case due to the state’s failure to establish probable cause, according to a news release from Beito & Lengeling, P.A.

Docherty agreed, finding that even if the allegations were true, Krenz committed no crime, and the case must be dismissed without a trial.

“Jeff Krenz should never have been tried in the first place,” Beito said. “He was pulling his daughter in a wagon a three or four miles an hour on a quiet, residential street with no traffic nearby. That’s not a crime.”

According to the complaint, Sleepy Eye Police received multiple complaints late last year of a moped pulling a red wagon with a toddler near Ellsworth Street, on the southeast end of town. The complaint added that the moped pulled a rope 20 to 25 feet long crossing Highway 4.

Krenz admitted to pulling a wagon with his four-year-old daughter inside, according to the complaint.
