Candidate forums tonight

NEW ULM — The League of Women Voters New Ulm is hosting two candidate forums today. The forums will include the New Ulm City Council president forum and Minnesota House District 16B forum.

Due to COVID restrictions, the public will not be allowed at the event but the forum will be broadcast live on New Ulm Cable Access Television (NUCAT), KNUJ radio and on YouTube. Questions may be submitted by the public in advance and during the live broadcast.

The New Ulm City Council President forum begins at 6:30 p.m. Andrea Boettger and Larry Mack will take questions about their candidacy for New Ulm City Council president. Boettger and Mack previously faced off for the city’s Fourth Ward seat in 2018. Mack won the 2018 election by ten votes. In August, Boettger and Mack faced current council President Charlie Schmitz in the primary. Mack and Boettger received the most votes in the primary and will be on the general election ballot Nov. 3.

The Minnesota House District 16B forum will follow at 7:30 p.m. with GOP incumbent Paul Torkelson and DFL challenger Marinda Kimmel. This is the second time Kimmel has challenged Torkelson for the 16B seat. She first ran against him in 2018.

Questions will be accepted throughout the forum via email and by telephone. Voters can also submit questions in advance via email.

The email address is lwvnewulm@lwvmn.org. Telephone numbers to call during the forums will be announced during the event. Please indicate the name of the forum in questions submitted by email. By League of Women Voter policy, the identity of the person asking the question is confidential. Any questions submitted via email will remain confidential with all identifying information removed before the event.
