Welcoming Communities meeting in Sleepy Eye to show survey results

SLEEPY EYE — Results of a Welcoming Communities Assessment survey will be revealed at a public meeting set for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Sleepy Event Center.

The survey was presented at a Nov. 5 meeting at the Event Center that included New Ulm, Sleepy Eye, Springfield and other Brown County residents partnering with the Greater Mankato Diversity Council and University of Minnesota Extension Service.

Survey results will be presented to help determine the most important topics to cover at 2020 Welcoming Communties meetings.

A light dinner will be provided by local businesses.

In November, New Ulm Forward members talked about the successes and challenges of creating a more inclusive community at the event that is part of a workshop series.

After dinner, participants broke into overlapping social sectors to discuss inclusivity in schools, health care, law enforcement, local government, non-profits including social service organizations, service clubs, local foundations, religious institutions and businesses.

Discussion guidelines included creating a safe feeling for people to talk, listen and be respectful.

A primary assumption of a safe space is that everyone talks with the positive intent of seeking greater knowledge and understanding.

Cohort communities with related events include St. James, St. Peter, Fairmont, Waseca and Montgomery/Le Center/Lonsdale.
