Edward William Dummer was born September 27, 1937, to Edward and Helen Wendinger Dummer of rural New Ulm. In 1938, they moved to the family farm northwest of St. George near the Minnesota River Valley, where Ed developed a deep work ethic, a love for animals and the outdoors, and a quiet confidence and curiosity that influenced his entire life. After attending Holy Trinity High School, Ed began farming full-time with his dad and then in partnership with older brother George whose farm was next door. He also served in the Minnesota Army National Guard Reserve from 1955-63 achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant with special qualifications as Marksman. Eddie still found time to go dancing at George’s Ballroom, where he met Patricia Haas from Gibbon. Their wedding on May 2, 1959, began 63 years of adventures on and off the farm, and in retirement, at their lake cabin near Grand Rapids.

Ed cultivated not only crops, but lifelong relationships as an agribusiness leader on his own or with Dummer Brothers, and within the community. An active parishioner of St. George and volunteer leader for the West Newton 4-H Club, Ed was a proud member of the Nicollet County Sheriff’s Posse for two decades. He got his private pilot’s license, collected vintage cars, loved hunting, fishing and target shooting and had an insatiable sweet tooth. Dad liked driving anything with a fast engine, enjoyed westerns and country music and could play the accordion. He shared his passions with his children and grandchildren and wanted to take care of his family until the very end.

Ed’s legacy lives on through his daughter, Kathy (Todd LaSalle) Dummer; sons, Steven (Lori) Dummer, Michael (Melissa) Dummer; grandchildren Mitchell, Brooke and Josh (Steve and Lori); Jacob, Jesse, Trevor and Anne (Mike and Missy). Survived by in-laws, Jean Dummer, Elaine and John Palmer, Carol and Tom Penkert, Donnie and Connie Haas, Carol Haas and many nieces and nephews.

Edward is preceded in death by his wife Pat; parents, Edward and Helen Dummer; infant sons, Douglas and Mark; brother, George Dummer; parents-in-law, Joe and Cecilia Haas; brother-in-law, Kenny Haas; and nephew, David Palmer.

A special thank you to the staff at NorBella and Minnesota Hospice for their heartfelt and compassionate care.
