Moms create memories with superhero sons on dance floor

NEW ULM — The dance floor at the New Ulm Conference Center was full of moms and their superhero sons for the annual Mom and Son Superhero Dance Sunday.

Supermen, Spidermen, and Thors populated the dancefloor among others as they jammed out to the Macarena, Baby Shark, and Cha Cha Slide. Boys from three through nine years old were able to dress up as their favorite superheroes and dance with their moms, some of whom came in their own super outfits.

The overwhelming favorite this year among the kids was Spiderman.

This year was the first time it was held at the conference center. In previous years it had been at Turner Hall and the Country Club.

Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) Program Director Betty Uehling said the move was a big success.

“It’s been wonderful having it here,” she said. “There’s great parking, it’s a great size room. It’s like Goldilocks, the room isn’t too big. It’s not too small. Lots of room to dance. The staff from Best Western in the convention center have been amazing to work with.”

Uehling said she’s found this event provides a great opportunity for moms to create memories with their sons.

“It’s a way of creating those memories for parents and kids,” she said. “They can put the world on hold for a bit and spend some special time together. They’re young for such a short time. This is a great memory builder.”

This rings true for Brandy Jensen, who’s brought her sons to the event for the past seven years. Her first son she brought, Jace, recently turned 10 and is too old to go. This year Jensen brought Cole, who came as Thor before deciding to change into Spiderman.

“On the way here, Cole said to me ‘Mom, this is gonna be this our day,'” Jensen said. “He was really excited about it. I think it’s really important for moms and sons to have special time together.”

It was a blast from the past as moms taught their kids the Cupid Shuffle during the mom and son superhero dance Sunday. Around 30 mom son pairs dressed up in their best garb and boogied.

Jensen said she enjoys how the dance provides her and her sons with an opportunity to have a good time in an open area where they can be free.

Uehling said it takes a good amount of effort to get the event put together, as the ECFE’s limited budget means much of what they’re able to provide comes from donations. Once everything comes to fruition, she said the boys are enthusiastic to get on the dance floor in their outfits.

“The boys love dressing up as their favorite superhero,” Uehling said. “I’ve talked to some parents who said their kids have had their costumes picked out for weeks. They couldn’t wait to get here. It’s fun seeing the boys out on the dance floor and the moms with them.”
