Ted Marti to present on Schell’s Brewery, Prohibition
Marti
NEW ULM — The public is invited to Lunch and a Bite of History on October 3. Schell’s Brewery President Ted Marti will give a one-hour presentation about “Schell’s Brewery and the Prohibition Era.” The presentation will be held in the Brown County Museum Annex meeting room at noon.
During the lecture, Marti will share stories about how the brewery survived Prohibition. When Prohibition became law, there were 1,300 breweries; fewer than 100 remained when Prohibition ended. During the 13 years of Prohibition, Schell’s creatively figured out a way to continue in business. They produced and sold near-beer, and soft drinks, and sold candy.
After Prohibition ended, the brewing industry changed dramatically. Marti will tell about the challenges and opportunities his family faced as they kept the brewery open and transformed it into the thriving enterprise it is today.
Lunch and a Bite of History is free to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch; complimentary coffee and water will be available.
