Brown County District Court

Brown County District Court

• Christopher D. Carnes, 23, Hutchinson, was charged with felony financial transaction card fraud Feb. 25. According to the complaint, New Ulm Police took a call at 3:32 p.m. Feb. 16 from a witness reporting fraudulent charges were made on her mother’s credit card that day after receiving fraud notification from her credit card company.

Total fraud charges were $1,331.79 including charges at Wal-Mart, Cashwise, Smokes Plus and New Ulm Tobacco.

Police met with a Mart-Mart manager to review video footage and receipts. Surveillance video went to the same self-checkout register after the victim left, and scanned a few items. The suspect, wearing a “Speed Quality Innovations” sweatshirt, continued to scan the rest of his groceries and appeared to pay in cash.

Smokes Plus provided a still photo of the suspect’s 2010 Dodge Avenger registered to Christopher D. Carnes. Cashwise security video and photos showed the same person made purchases and matched the Smokes Plus video suspect using the victim’s credit card.

Local authorities told law enforcement family with Carnes positively identified him. A warrant for his arrest was requested and issued Feb. 25.
