BLUE EARTH COUNTY — Blue Earth County deputies, Mayo Ambulance and Eagle Lake Fire Dept. personnel were dispatched to the County Road 12 roundabout at Highway 14 for a crash with injuries reported at 3:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Hundreds of gallons of diluted calcium chloride (commonly used as a dust suppressant on gravel roads) leaked from the trailer fill location before the trailer was secured and pulled back onto its tires, according to a Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office media release.

The driver and only semi occupant, Jason Glenn Smebak, 52, Little Falls, was transported from the scene by ambulance with minor injuries. No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the crash.

Efforts to contain the spill were implemented with assistance from the Blue Earth County Highway Department and Affordable Towing. The Minnesota Duty Officer (a single answering point for local and state agencies to request state-level assistance for emergencies, serious accidents or incidents, or for reporting hazardous materials and petroleum spills) was notified.

Environmental impact is expected to be minimal due to the chemical involved, according to the media release.

The semi tractor, a 2006 International, is owned by the Knife River Corporation – North Central, Sauk Rapids.

The incident is under investigation with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol.

Starting at $4.50/week.
