Dismissed by Judge.

——–

The heaviest penalties thus far met-ed out to prohibition law violators of New Ulm, were imposed upon Fred. Williams and his son, Robert Williams, by Judge John F. McGee in United States court at Mankato, yesterday morning. Each of the defendants was fined $400 for possession, and in addition thereto, Robert Williams was given a sentence of six months in the Sibley county jail at Gaylord for selling intoxicating-liquor on two counts. Charges of maintaining a nuisance, which were included in the information filed with the court against both men by U. S. District Attorney Lafayette French, were withdrawn by the latter, following the urgent plea of their counsel, Attorney Alfred W. Mueller of the local law firm of Mueller & Erickson.

Place Raided March 18.

The Williams drink emporium on North Minnesota street was raided by prohibition operatives, March 18, after intoxicating liquor had been obtained there March 7 and 8, for which the federal men paid 35 cents a drink .During the same evening, the places of Dorn & Schloegel, Broadway and Third North street, and Manderfeld & Schmitz, North Minnesota street, were likewise, raided by members of the same party. A. S. Dorn and Wenzel Schloegel were arrested, together with Fred. and Robert Williams, later being released on bonds. No liquor was found by the operatives in the Manderfeld & Schmitz place.

Change Please to Guilty.

Messrs. Williams appeared before Judge McGee in federal court at Mankato, Tuesday charges of sale and possession. They later changed their pleas to guilty, Wednesday afternoon, and were ordered to appear for sentence, yesterday morning, with the above mentioned result.

Injunction Denied.

In connection with the cases against them, Messrs. Williams were cited to show cause why their place should not be closed. This order of the court was served upon them, Saturday, returnable Tuesday, when Judge McGee dismissed the abatement proceedings.

Dorn Seriously Ill.

Due to the serious illness of A. S. Dorn, the cases against him and Wenzel Schloegel were continued until the October term of federal court in Mankato. The former is charged with the sale, and the latter with possession of intoxicating liquor.

Consternation Rampant.

As a result of the heavy penalties imposed upon Messrs. Williams by Federal Judge McGee at Mankato, yesterday morning, consternation reigns supreme in local circles of those connected with moonshine and bootlegging activities. News of the court’s action spread like wildfire and the illicit liquor traffickers are beginning to sit up and take notice. In the long run, it doesn’t pay to go counter to Uncle Sam’s established laws.
