Area roundup: MVL/NUC boys place first at True Team meet

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

WELLS — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys track and field team placed first out of 16 teams at the Section 2A True Team track and field meet on Tuesday, advancing to the True Team State Championships.

It is the first time the team has advanced since 2016. The event will be held on May 18 at Stillwater High School.

The Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet boys placed third with 766.5, while the River Valley boys placed 10th with 467.

On the girls side of the meet River Valley placed third with 777, while LCWM/N placed sixth with 690.5 and the MVL/NUC girls placed 557.5.

Josh Bentler led the MVL/NUC boys, placing first in the 100 (11.91), while Will Kaesermann placed first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.96) and second in the 300-meter hurdles (43.74). Jaden Helget placed third in pole vault (11-06), and Ben Halvorson placed first in triple jump (43-0.75). The 4×200 relay team (1:35.58) and the 4×400 relay team (3:37.66) also both placed first.

For the LCWM/N boys team, Drew Turgeon placed first in Discus (149-6), while Logan Sandmeyer placed first in Long Jump (20-11) and Charlie Gengler placed third in the 800 (2:06.10).

The River Valley boys 4×400 relay team placed second (3:41.52).

Hailey Hollar led the River Valley girls, placing first in the 100 (13.03), the 200 (26.62), the 400 (1:00/92) and third in the long jump (16-9.5). Aubrey Steffl placed third in the 800 (2:32.52), while Marissa Pabst placed third in the 1,600 (5:39.82). The River Valley 4×400 relay team (4:16.12) and 4×800 relay team (10:33.25) placed first, while the 4×100 relay team (53.75) and 4×200 relay team (1:53.58) both placed second.

For the LCWM/N girls, Katelin Flack placed first in Discus (109-1) and Alyssa Greenough placed first in high jump (5). Maggie Graupman placed third in triple jump (32-10.25).

For the MVL/NUC girls, Claudia Weisensel placed third in the 300-meter hurdles (50.96).

PREP SOFTBALL

MCW 15, St. Mary’s 0 (6 innings)

SLEEPY EYE — Martin County West downed Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 15-0 in a nonconference softball game Tuesday.

Natalie Zarn took the loss for the Knights, striking out five while allowing 13 and walking four. Nell Weiss had the only hit for St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s (6-7) hosts Wabasso on Thursday.
