The fishing opener is today. This year, the Governor’s Fishing Opener will be held in Stillwater on the St. Croix River, but there are plenty of great fishing locations around New Ulm. Bianchi finally laid to rest Last Friday, New Ulm and several other Minnesota communities celebrated the return of Medal of Honor recipient Captain Willbald Bianchi’s remains to New Ulm Minnesota, over 80 years after his death. His remains arrived by plane at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Friday afternoon and were transported by hearse to New Ulm. The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds us that Motorists traveling Minnesota roadways this spring should watch for large farm equipment moving between farms and fields for planting season, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Nobody has to remind people living in southwest Minnesota this particular season is vital for the livelihood of farmers who play a big role in the region’s economy. “We have one Earth and we have to take care of it.” The statement was made by Marshall Noon Rotary Club member Laura Mueller-Anderson last week on Earth Day during a cleanup of the diversion channel near Highway 59 in Marshall. Thumbs Up Capt. Bianchi receives long overdue welcome home After over 80 years, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and New Ulm native Capt. Willibald Charles Bianchi has returned home. Bianchi was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery and valor above and beyond the call of duty for his heroic actions in Bataan, Philippine Islands during WWII. Unfortunately, before Bianchi could receive the award, he was captured by Japanese forces and held as a prisoner of war. Thumbs Up Dancing like the Stars inspiring Last weekend 2B Continued hosted its sixth annual Dancing Like the Stars event in Glencoe and it was another rousing success. The dancing competition netted $560,000 to support suicide prevention, mental health, wellness education and outreach across rural Minnesota. This annual fundraiser is a big deal. The actual competition in Glencoe consistently sells out of tickets to the point where surrounding committees are able to host screening parties.
