Thumbs Up Outdoor music events return The return of the summer season also means the return of outdoor concerts. The New Ulm Municipal Band held its first German Park performance of the summer Wednesday. The municipal band will continue to hold Wednesday night concerts in German Park throughout the summer, with a few notable exceptions. The Wednesday, June 24 concert will be at Oak Hills as part of their annual Ice Cream Social. Thursday, the Concord Singers performed in German Park to kick off New Ulm Music in the Park Series. THUMBS UP Flowers return to downtown NU Downtown New Ulm is significantly more colorful this week following the annual planting of flowers. A total of 37 planters, 97 pots and 125 hanging baskets were filled with flowers between Tuesday and Thursday. The work was done by over 30 volunteers from several organizations including Sertoma, the New Ulm Gardening Club and New Ulm Chamber of Commerce. THUMBS UP Remember what Memorial Day is all about Memorial Day weekend is here and gives us an opportunity to remember those that have fallen. There are several Memorial Day observances scheduled in the region including those in New Ulm. This year’s Memorial Day celebration will have new meaning in New Ulm. Earlier this month Capt. Willibald Bianchi was given a full military honors funeral in the Soldier’s Rest section of New Ulm’s cemetery, over 80 years after his death. THUMBS UP Graduation season begins It is the start of graduation season this weekend. Within the next couple of weeks, all local schools will be holding commencement ceremonies for their respective graduates. The first two local graduations are coming this weekend. Martin Luther College (MLC) will hold a commencement service at 10 a.m. Saturday at the MLC campus. Cathedral High School will follow with a graduation ceremony held at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Church. THUMBS UP Mother’s Day and Fishing opener this weekend This weekend will be one of the busiest in Minnesota thanks to the combination of the Minnesota Fishing Opener and Mothers Day falling back to back. The fishing opener is today. This year, the Governor’s Fishing Opener will be held in Stillwater on the St. Croix River, but there are plenty of great fishing locations around New Ulm. Bianchi finally laid to rest Last Friday, New Ulm and several other Minnesota communities celebrated the return of Medal of Honor recipient Captain Willbald Bianchi’s remains to New Ulm Minnesota, over 80 years after his death. His remains arrived by plane at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Friday afternoon and were transported by hearse to New Ulm. Along the procession route into New Ulm, hundreds of people lined up to pay respect to Capt. Bianchi. It was a once in a lifetime display of respect to a fallen WWII soldier who finally came home.
