New scam involving jail bookings
Scam artists have developed a new insidious way of ripping off victims by using county jail rosters. One of the oldest phone scams perpetrated was to call a victim, claiming to be a family member who got arrested and needed funds to bail out of jail. A new version of this scam has come to Brown County that is proven more effective because it uses actual jail rosters. Scammers monitor the actual jail roaster and when a new person is booked in jail, the scammer calls their family to ask for money. When the family checks the jail roaster, it confirms what the scammer said, making it easier for them to trick victims into handing over money. Brown County Sheriff's Office has release a warning against the scam. They remind people that true law enforcement would never request bail payments through PayPal, phone cards, Amazon gift cards, iTunes cards or other gift cars. It is recommended family come to the Brown County Sheriff's Office to verify bail amount rather than make payments over the phone or online.
