Volunteers make the Brown County Fair happen
The Brown County Fair is in full swing again and has returned with dozens of exciting events and exhibits. The fair has something for everyone, whether they come for the rides, entertainment, 4-H and FFA exhibits or even the fair food. Since the fair happens every year, it is easy to take it for granted, but the work to put on the fair takes the work of many volunteers working long hours. The effort is worth it, as it is a rare event that brings all of Brown County together.

Historic voter turnout in 2026 primary
The Minnesota primary election was held Tuesday and it broke the record for primary turnout. More than 1,103,000 Minnesotans voted in the primary, which is unusual. This is the first time a Minnesota primary election has surpassed a million votes. For perspective, around 25% of eligible voters voted Tuesday. Historically speaking, primary elections have a lower participation level, but interest in primary voting is on the rise. High primary turnout suggests the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3 will be impressive.

Dealing with a stray kitten problem
The Brown County Humane Society is reporting a surplus of stray kittens in their care. The Humane Society counted as many as 43 cats at their facility earlier this week. The Humane Society can comfortably take care of around 20 animals. The high number of cats does strain humane society resources. Most of the cats are young, less than a year old. Typically the Humane Society has a higher number of adult cats, but recently the public has been turning in litters of strays from across the county. It's not just New Ulm, these kittens are being found in Hanska and Sleepy Eye as well. Volunteers with the Humane Society have indicated this is not limited to Brown County. Surrounding counties are seeing an uptick in strays. There is a need for the public to prioritize spaying and neutering pets to curb these issues.
