Bulls get payback with 6-1 win over Steel

NEW ULM — Peter Verstegen and Nick Bowlin each scored two goals as the North Iowa Bulls avenged a 2-1 home loss Friday to the New Ulm Steel with a 6-1 win Saturday night at the New Ulm Civic Center in an NA3HL game.

Michael Smits scored the lone goal for New Ulm (16-13-0-1), while James Spaargaren and Jack Parks added assists.

Steel goalie Henry Baribeau stopped 38 of 44 Bulls’ shots.

New Ulm fell behind 1-0 at the 3:04 mark of the first period on Bowlin’s first goal of the game.

North Iowa upped the lead to 2-0 just 54 seconds into the second period on Verstegen’s first goal of the game before he added his second goal four minutes late for a 3-0 lead.

Smits’ second goal of the year on the power play cut the Bulls lead to 3-1 at the 16:52 mark of the second period.

But New Ulm could get no closer as the Bulls responded with three goals in the third period on scores from Brendan Studioso, Bowlin and Matt Dahlseide to pull away.

The Steel are at Coulee Region Friday before hosting them at 7:10 p.m. next Saturday.
