NEW ULM — The Junior Pioneers of New Ulm and Vicinity will be holding their Winter Social on Friday, Feb 23 at the Green Mill Restaurant. A social hour will start at at 5:15 p.m., and dinner and program at 6 p.m. Cost is $30 per person. The program will feature Dr. Dan Groebner, who will speak on the history of St. Alexander’s/Loretto Hospital in New Ulm.

Many local benefactors supported New Ulm’s first hospital, St. Alexander’s, which opened in 1883 to fill the medical needs identified after the devastating cyclone of 1881. The hospital grew with at least five additions over the next twenty years. When a completely new building opened in 1913, the name was changed to Loretto Hospital.
