Area roundup: Cedar Mountain sinks Cathedral

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cedar Mountain 74, Cathedral 54

NEW ULM — Cedar Mountain stayed atop the Tomahawk Division on Friday night with a 74-54 win over New Ulm Cathedral in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

The Cougars now sit a half game over Springfield for first in the Tomahawk as they moved to 17-3 overall and 14-1 in the division.

Cedar Mountain was led by Blake Schueller’s 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Blake Steffl had 17 points, 14 assists and five rebounds. Carson Schiller added 11 points and five rebounds also for the Cougars, while Jackson Guetter had 7 points and Zach Sandgren had 6 points and 10 rebounds.

The Greyhounds (9-12, 7-7) were led by Colin Anderson, who had 17 points, while Jake Finstad had 9 points and seven rebounds and Eli Anderson had 9 points.

Cedar Mountain is at Wabasso for a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Tomahawk matchup, while the Greyhounds host Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in Tomahawk action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 67, GFW 54

SLEEPY EYE — Behind Landon Wendinger’s double-double, Sleepy Eye took down Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 67-54 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Wendinger had 23 points and 21 rebounds to go with three assists and three blocks, while Robert Romberg had 16 points. Eric Lozano added 14 points for the Indians, while Brayden Heiderscheidt had 8 points, eight assists and four rebounds.

Cole Jacobson led GFW with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Clayton Karg had 10 points and Easton Taylor had 9 points.

Sleepy Eye (9-11, 6-8) plays Madelia at Bethany Lutheran College in a 5 p.m. game Saturday. GFW (7-12, 3-9) hosts Nicollet on Monday night.

Nicollet 98, ACGE 75

NICOLLET — Nicollet neared the century mark on Friday night with a 98-75 win over Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.

The Raiders were led in the win by Carson Kettner’s 23 points, while Henry Oscarson had 22 points. Henry Kennedy added 15 points and seven rebounds for Nicollet, while Keegan Hulke had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Nicollet, winners of three straight, moved to 9-12 overall and 5-6 in the Valley with Friday’s win. The Raiders are at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday night.

CMC 80, Springfield 73

PRINSBURG — Central Minnesota Christian knocked off Springfield 80-73 on Friday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.

CMC moved to 17-4 with the win, while Springfield dropped to 19-2.

Isaac Fredin led Springfield with 23 points and four rebounds, while Brayden Sturm had 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Bryan Buerkle had 19 points also for Springfield.

CMC shot 61.5% from the field to Springfield’s 50%.

Springfield is at Madelia on Monday night.

Wabasso 68, LQPV 65

WABASSO — Wabasso held off Lac Qui Parle Valley 68-65 on Friday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Brayden Guetter had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Rabbits, while Drew Kemp had 18 points and Caden Frericks had 15 points and 23 rebounds. Jack Burns added 11 assists and five rebounds for the Rabbits, now 13-8 on the season.

The Rabbits (13-8) hosts Cedar Mountain on Tuesday night for a Tomahawk game.

Madelia 88, Cleveland 73

MADELIA — Madelia downed Cleveland 88-73 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.

Kaydon Firchau led the Blackhawks in the win with 37 points and seven assists, while Jaydon Jones had 23 points. Josiah DeMaris added 11 points also for Madelia, while Tate Becker hauled in 11 rebounds.

Madelia (16-3) is at Bethany Lutheran College for a 6:45 p.m. game against Sleepy Eye on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 83, Worthington 41

WORTHINGTON — New Ulm downed Worthington 83-41 on Friday night in a Big South Conference girls basketball game.

Brooklyn Lewis led the Eagles with 22 points, while Maggie Joyce had 18 points, Maddie Backer had 14 points and McKenna Hulke had 10 points.

The Eagles, now 14-7 overall and 10-3 in the conference, host New London-Spicer on Tuesday night.

BLHS 63, Springfield 55

HECTOR – Springfield’s Emma Hauger scored her 1,000th career point on Friday night in a 63-55 loss at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Hauger finished with 17 points, while Jada Reese had 16 points and four rebounds and Olivia Milbrath had 8 points and eight rebounds.

BLHS was led by Lily Hubin’s 38 points, while Jamie Novotny had 16 points.

Springfield fell to 13-9 overall and 9-6 in Tomahawk play.

Lester Prairie 80, St. Mary’s

LESTER PRAIRIE – Lester Prairie knocked off Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday night, winning 80-74 in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights in the loss with 34 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Olivia Schieffert had 18 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Brynne Ibberson had 11 points and four rebounds, while Natalie Fischer had 9 points and five rebounds.

Addison Hoof had 33 to lead Lester Prairie, while Anah Lee had 28 points.

St. Mary’s fell to 21-2 overall and 14-1 in the Tomahawk with the loss. Despite the loss, St. Mary’s has already guaranteed itself a spot in the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Championship at St. Mary’s High School on Feb. 18.

BOYS HOCKEY

Luverne 6, New Ulm 2

LUVERNE — Luverne topped New Ulm 6-2 on Friday night in a Big South Conference boys hockey game.

Brody Nordby scored both New Ulm goals, while Hunter Larson and Trevan Thordson had an assist on one of the goals. New Ulm outshot Luverne 43-28.

New Ulm (10-10-2) is at Vadnais Heights to take on Gentry Academy in a Tuesday night game.
