SLEEPY EYE — Second-seeded Springfield defeated top-seeded Sleepy Eye 5-3 in the Southwest-East Sub-Sub-State Senior Legion Baseball Tournament championship game on Saturday.

With the win, Springfield claims the top seed in the Southwest Sub-State Tournament, while Sleepy Eye will take the second seed. That tournament will begin Thursday in St. James.

Eli Heglund earned the win for Springfield, striking out two and allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings pitched. At the plate, Adiel Trevino had a double with three RBIs, while Aiden Moriarty and Heglund each had a hit and an RBI. Brecken Heiling and Eli Streich each had a hit and two runs scored.

Merrick Mathiowetz took the loss for Sleepy Eye, striking out 10 while allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits in six innings. At the plate, Chino Luna had two hits and a run scored, while Karter Haala had two hits. Tyler Mathiowetz had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Springfield will face Pipestone in the first round of the sub-state tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m., while Sleepy Eye takes on Slayton at 5 p.m.
