EDINA — New Ulm started the Gopher Classic Legion Baseball Tournament with a pair of wins on Friday, defeating Farmington 2 17-3 in five innings and Bayport 5-2.

Mitchell Hopp earned the win in Game 1 against Farmington 2, striking out two and allowing one run on three hits in two innings. Levi Hopp pitched three innings, striking out two and allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits. At the plate, Levi Hopp was 3 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Hunter Larson had three hits and three runs scored. Jake Finstad had two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.

Hunter Larson earned the win in Game 2, striking out four and allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. At the plate, Zach Hubbard was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Alex Portner had a hit and two runs scored. Josh Forsnter had an RBI and a run scored.

New Ulm (10-7) continues the tournament with a game against Monticello at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and another against Edina at 7 p.m. Saturday.

MARSHALL 5, NEW ULM 1

ALEXANDRIA — New Ulm Junior Legion split a pair of games at the Alexandria Junior Legion Baseball Tournament on Friday, falling to Marshall 5-1 but defeating Willmar VFW 8-2.

Miles Castleman took the loss in Game 1, striking out two and allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six innings. At the plate, Ryler Collins had the lone hit for New Ulm, with Owen Castleman scoring a run.

Parker Ranweiler earned the win in Game 2, striking out one and allowing two runs on seven hits. At the plate, Owen Castleman was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Ranweiler was 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Miles Castleman was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Conlin McAlpine had two hits.

New Ulm (14-6) continues the tournament with a game against Alexandria Red on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
