Area roundup: Cougars win over Greyhounds in 5-setter

Cedar Mountain 3, Cathedral 2

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain defeated New Ulm Cathedral 22-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball game Tuesday.

Reagyn Kleinschmidt and Kendra Erickson each had 14 kills in the game for Cedar Mountain, with Kleinschmidt adding 18 assists and Erickson adding 15 assists. Cloey Wildt had seven kills and six blocks, while Aubrey Steffl had six kills and 21 digs. Brynn Hoffbeck had 30 digs for the Cougars.

Jaylin Hartness had 19 kills and 25 digs for Cathedral, while Shay Wilfahrt had 14 kills and 26 digs. Madelyn Haala had 27 assists and 12 digs, while Abbey Hillesheim had 26 set assists and 23 digs.

Cedar Mountain (6-2, 2-0) plays in the Wabasso Tournament on Saturday. Cathedral (3-7, 0-2) hosts Lester Prairie on Thursday.

Wabasso 3, St. Mary’s 1

WABASSO — Wabasso downed Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball game Tuesday.

Alivia Olson led the Rabbits with 21 kills and two aces, while Carly Fenger and Camryn Irlbeck each had 11 kills. Sarah Carlson had 48 set assists, 15 digs and two aces, while Audrey Johnson had 17 digs and an ace.

Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights with 14 kills and 15 digs, while Reese Hoffmann had 14 kills and eight digs. Josie Helget added 27 set assists for St. Mary’s.

Wabasso (9-0, 2-0) travels to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday. St. Mary’s (5-4,0-2) hosts Springfield on Thursday.

Sleepy Eye 3, GFW 1

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye took down Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18 Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball game.

Sam Price led the way for the Indians, collecting 18 kills, 14 digs and two aces, while Jaelynn Schauman had nine kills and two blocks. Hannah Meyer had 38 set assists with four aces.

GFW was led by Trinity Stearns with 11 kills, while Kora Schwarzrock had nine kills. Natalie Ahlbrecht had 19 set assists and a block, while Kinley Bruns had 15 digs and three aces.

Sleepy Eye (5-3-1, 1-1) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday, while GFW (0-4, 0-1) hosts Wabasso on Thursday.

Madelia 3, Nicollet 1

NICOLLET — Madelia defeated Nicollet 25-17, 8-25, 25-12, 25-19 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division volleyball game Tuesday.

Ashlynn Sweet led the Blackhawks with 13 kills, four digs, three blocks and an ace, while Lauryn Grev had five kills and 13 digs. Alicia Lugo added 17 set assists, five digs and two aces, while Makayla Sorenson had four kills, 13 digs and four aces.

Leah Bode led the way for Nicollet with seven kills and 19 digs, while Cason Forbrook had 22 digs and five aces. Savannah Klockziem had six kills, while Katelyn Soost ahd 15 set assists.

Madelia (3-5-1, 1-1) travels to Alden-Conger on Thursday. Nicollet (1-2, 0-2) hosts Springfield on Monday.

Maple River 3, MVL 1

MAPLETON — Maple River downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 14-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-15 in a South Central Conference volleyball game on Tuesday.

Olivia Hammer had 11 kills with seven digs and a block for MVL, while Jenna Bates had 14 kills with 10 digs, an ace and a block. Marley Schauer had six kills, five digs and three blocks, while Avery Freier had 26 set assists, six digs and an ace.

MVL (0-4, 0-1) hosts Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday.

BOYS SOCCER

New Ulm 4, St. Peter 0

ST. PETER — New Ulm defeated St. Peter 4-0 in a Big South Conference boys soccer game on Tuesday.

Jackson Ocampo had all four goals for New Ulm, with Josh Shaneman assisting on two and Dan Brownfield assisting on one. Jens Quist had seven saves for New Ulm.

New Ulm (6-1, 3-0) travels to Marshall on Thursday.

New Ulm 4, River Valley 3

NEW ULM — New Ulm took down River Valley 4-3 in a nonconference girls tennis meet Tuesday.

New Ulm’s Karlee Prahl defeated Taylor Berkner 6-3, 7-6 (5) at No. 1 singles, while River Valley’s Brissa Hernandez downed Joci Petterson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, New Ulm’s Carmen Schotzko defeated Jillian Mays 6-4, 6-1, while New Ulm’s Natalie Fischer defeated Selene Krohnfeldt 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, River Valley’s Chloe Okerman and Dani Junker defeated Lillian Kral and Aubrey Demaris 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while River Valley’s Bronwyn Sorenson and Alisyn Danielson defeated Kaylee Evans and Lydia Osborne 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, New Ulm’s Natalie Schwartz and Avah Kruse defeated Morgan Arsndorf and Reagan Moody 6-4, 6-4.

SM/SE/NUC boys finish 10th at Norwood meet

NORWOOD — The St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral boys cross country team finished 10th out of 23 teams in a prep cross country meet in Norwood on Tuesday.

Noah Christensen finished 32nd for SM/SE/NUC with a time of 17:58.83, while Levi Hagen finished 37th with a time of 18:11.60. Raul Rodriguez finished 39th with a time of 18:23.09.

On the girl’s side of the meet, Emma Hagen finished 34th with a time of 21:55.14, while Millie Lax finished 49th with a time of 22:52.59.
