Silver does enough to earn split with USC
NEW ULM — In their doubleheader Saturday against the USC Junior Legion at Mueller Park, the New Ulm VFW Silver totaled three hits in each five-inning game.
One produced a close win, while the other ended in a lopsided loss.
Silver pitcher Wyatt Hansen held USC to only two hits and a Hansen RBI single in the bottom of the third inning proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win.
Hansen struck out three and was aided by two double plays by his defense in the game.
Bobby Rewitzer had the other two hits for the Silver.
Colsen Ravenhorst took the loss for USC. He fanned four.
The second game was an 8-0 win for USC.
In the opener, USC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a fielder’s choice before New Ulm knotted the game in the home half of the inning on a Rewitzer RBI single.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the third.
Chase Wilson led off with a walk and stole second.
A one-out single from Rewitzer preceded a Hansen line drive single to center that scored the eventual winning run.
“Wyatt did phenomenal,” Silver head coach Josh Altmann said. “He had great control and a good arm. And we were able to produce just enough runs to win — that has been our M.O. is to manufacture just enough runs to win and be efficient.”
But Game 2 was a different story as three hits were not enough runs to win.
USC scored four runs in the first inning and then repeated that with four runs in the second and cruised to an 8-0 win.
Jase Crabtree got the mound win for the USC Junior Legion.
Bobby Rewitzer took the loss for the Silver, allowing eight runs in two innings.
“It is tough to come back when you get down (8-0) early,” Altmann said. “They did have some soft contact hits but they are part of the game.”
And it is especially tough when hitting is hard to come by.
“But I know that they have it in them,” Altmann said. “I still think that we are the better team — we have some issues to fix at the plate — but we are going to keep our heads up and get more reps at the plate.”
Altmann said that long-term his team will fix the hitting issues.
The Silver are now 5-2 and off until they play in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic starting at 6 pm. Thursday at Johnson Park.
