Area roundup: Hernandez single lifts Sleepy Eye by MCW in 10 innings

PREP SOFTBALL

Sleepy Eye 3, MCW 2 (10 innings)

SLEEPY EYE — Brissa Hernandez’s single brought home the winning run in a 10-inning nonconference softball game against Martin County West, leading Sleepy Eye to a 3-2 victory.

Katelyn Tauer got the win for Sleepy Eye in all 10 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out eight. Paige Haala led the way at the plate for Sleepy Eye, going 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Tauer also had a solo homer in the sixth to tie the game, while Taylor Berkner tripled to lead off the 10th. MCW loaded the bases intentionally and Brissa Hernandez singled in Berkner for the walk-off winner.

Sleepy Eye (14-6) awaits Section 2A playoff seeding next.

Madelia 20, GHEC 2 (5 innings)

TRUMAN — Madelia ran by Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 20-2 in five innings of Valley Conference softball on Tuesday.

Lauryn Grev led the Blackhawks at the plate in the win, going 4 for 4 with four doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored. Kellie Koberoski was 3 for 5 with an RBI also for Madelia, while Veronica Ibeling was 2 for 5 with three RBIs, Alicia Lugo was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Grace Tatro was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Janelle Callejas was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Corban Tatro earned the win in all five innings, allowing three hits and no walks for two unearned runs while striking out 12.

Madelia (8-10, 4-6) awaits Section 2A playoff seedings next.

St. Mary’s 12, Cleveland 8

CLEVELAND — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Cleveland 12-8 Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Taylor Mathiowetz pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up 11 hits, walking three and striking out one. Natalie Zarn finished the game by striking out two and allowind two hits. At the plate, Adeline Hoffmann was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, while Nell Weiss was 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI. Reese Hoffmann was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Kailey Nelson was 2 for 3 and Sidney Tauer was 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Josie Helget was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

St. Mary’s (8-9) hosts Mountain Lake Area on Friday.

LCWM 2, Watertown-Mayer 0

WATERTOWN — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial shut out Watertown-Mayer 2-0 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Nettie Parsons got the win in the circle, allowing five hits while striking out 12. Avery Voges led LCWM at the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

LCWM (16-2) takes on Martin County West in a Valley Conference Showcase game Friday.

PREP TENNIS

New Ulm 4, Prior Lake 3

PRIOR LAKE — New Ulm edged Prior Lake 4-3 on Tuesday in a Section 2AA Tennis Quarterfinals matchup.

The win moves New Ulm on to a semifinals meeting with Mankato West in Mankato at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Charlie Weidman earned a win for New Ulm on Tuesday with a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 win over Tarun Gopi at No. 2 singles, while New Ulm’s Gideon Heins defeated Jack Williams 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. New Ulm’s No. 4 singles player Ian Schotzko also picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sam Williams, while New Ulm’s No. 2 doubles team of Aaron Black and Ethan Neet defeated Dhruv Jopi and Broden Percival 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Springfield 17, BLHS 1 (5 innings)

Springfield 20, BLHS 0 (5 innings)

HECTOR — Springfield swept a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday, winning 17-1 in Game 1 and 20-0 in Game 2.

Kade Nachreiner got the win in Game 1, striking out six while allowing one earned run on five hits in five innings. Noah Neperman was 2 for 4 for the Tigers at the plate with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kade Nachreiner was 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs. Jakob Nachreiner was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Brayden Sturm was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Neperman got the win in Game 2 for Springfield, striking out 11 and allowing one hit and three walks in five innings. At the plate, Kade Nachreiner was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Jackson Ludwig was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Neperman was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Springfield travels to Red Rock Central on Thursday.

MADELIA — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Madelia 3-1 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday.

Brandon Schmitz got the win for the Knights, striking out six while allowing one earned run on seven hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Merrick Mathiowetz collected a hit and an RBI at the plate, while Mark Anderson had a hit and a run scored.

Tate Becker took the loss for the Blackhawks, striking out 10 while allowing two earned runs on three hits and five walks. Jake Lehman was 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored, while Tony Zaleski was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

St. Mary’s travels to Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman on Thursday. Madelia plays MVL at Johnson Park on Thursday.

Fairmont 8, New Ulm 4

FAIRMONT — Fairmont rolled to an 8-4 win over the Eagles in a Big South Conference baseball game at Herb Wolf Field.

Blaine Olson took the loss for New Ulm in four innings, allowing four hits and four walks for one earned run. Lucas Suess was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks to lead New Ulm at the plate, while Tanner Backer was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

New Ulm plays a doubleheader at Red Wing on Saturday.

RRC/WWG 8, Wabasso 0

WABASSO — Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove defeated Wabasso 8-0 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.

Zach Skoblik took the loss for Wabasso, striking out two while allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings. Joe Liebl had the Rabbits’s lone hit, adding a stolen base.

Wabasso travels to Minneota on Tuesday.

New Ulm boys take second at TCU meet

MONTGOMERY — The New Ulm boys golf team took second out of seven teams in a golf meet on Tuesday.

The New Ulm girls placed fourth.

St. Peter won the boys side of the meet with a 295, followed by New Ulm (332), Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial (339), Waseca (349), Mayer Lutheran (274), Tri-City United (383) and Belle Plaine (386).

St. Peter also won the girls meet with a 404, followed by Belle Plaine (409), Waseca (426), New Ulm (465) and TCU (465). Mayer Lutheran and LCWM were incomplete.

St. Peter’s Blake Magelee and Kaiden Brovold led the boys meet with a 71. New Ulm’s Will Foxxen tied for seventh with an 82, while Brandt Munson and Brecken Neuman tied for 10th with an 83. Will Weidman tied for 12th with a 84.

St. Peter’s Karli Miller and Mayer Lutheran’s Avery Arvig led the girls meet with an 87. New Ulm’s Elyse Dreckman placed eitghth witha 105, while teammate Brooklyn Hagberg placed 14th with a 111.

SEU boys, girls win over Madelia

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye United boys and girls golf teams both won over Madelia in a nonconference golf meet, with the boys winning 158-190 and the girls winning 191-234.

SEU’s Nolan Kucera was the medalist for the boys side of the meet with a 37, followed by SEU’s Josh Sellner (38), Madelia’s Cross Schmidt (39), SEU’s Blaine Arneson (41) and SEU’s Isaac Christensen (42).

SEU took the top four spots in the girls meet, led by Meriden Andres with a 45. She was followed by Kiara Murphy (47), Sam Price (49), Chloe Walter (50) and Madelia’s Dahlia Schmidt (51).

SEU plays at Oakdale Golf Club on Thursday.

Cedar Mountain boys win over Springfield, GFW

SPRINGFIELD — The Cedar Mountain boys took first place at a Tomahawk Conference golf meet against Springfield and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

Cedar Mountain scored a 166, followed by Springfield’s 172 and GFW’s 192.

The Springfield girls scored a 233 in the meet, while GFW and Cedar Mountain were incomplete.

Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller was the medalist for the boys meet, scoring a 39. He was followed by Springfield’s Ben Potter (40), Cedar Mountain’s Ryan Kevelin (40), Springfield’s Dylan Simonson (42), Springfield’s Easton Jensen (42), Cedar Mountain’s Thomas Dahmes (42) and GFW’s Cole Jacobson (43).

Mavri Winkelmann placed first in the girls meet for Springfield, shooting a 44. She was followed by GFW’s Jenna Schweiss (47), Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford (54), Springfield’s Ava LIipetzky (60) and Springfield’s Kynslee Kastner (63).
