MLC men’s, women’s track and field teams take 2nd at UMAC Championships

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

MORRIS — The Martin Luther College men’s outdoor track and field team concluded its season at the UMAC Championships on Friday and Saturday (May 3-4).

The Knights continued to impress in multiple events and came close to winning the conference after Saturday’s events, but were narrowly edged out by UW-Superior. MLC finished all events in second place (237 points), while the Yellowjackets (253 points) again claimed the title.

Jeremiah Stanton and Samuel Plocher came out on top and earned MLC its four first-place finishes in the championships. Plocher’s big day appeared on Saturday, as the freshman took first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.08 seconds) and the high jump (1.91 meters). Stanton displayed his versatility in numerous events and received first in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 57.03 seconds, surpassing the next-best time in the race by over two seconds. The sophomore then jumped 6.40 meters for the top spot in the long jump. Stanton followed up those performances with a second-place finish in the triple jump (13.69 meters) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.26 seconds).

MLC also broke a school record in the 4×100 relay race after a mark of 43.45 seconds (Martin Raasch, Stephen Wietzke, Lucas Holtz, Stanton). The fastest time in the race was previously held by Justin Cloute, Eli Cloute, Steve White, and Ben Lawrenz (43.67) in 1998.

The 4×400 relay team, featuring Stanton, Holtz, Raasch, and Micah Schibbelhut also represented well, earning second for their mark of 3:29.19.

Schibbelhut also broke his school record of 3.89 meters in the pole vault by jumping 4.14 meters on Friday putting him in second.

The men would take four more second-place finishes with Raasch clocking in at 51.55 seconds in the 400-meter run, besting out 21 other runners. Camden Sulzle ran the 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:09.58 and the 5000-meter run in 16:23.23, while Jack Pittenger threw the javelin 44.21 meters.

Joshua Zander earned a personal record time of 16:30.91 for third in the 5000-meter behind Sulzle, while RJ Perry placed third in the discus throw (38.91 meters).

Holtz and Nathan Pausma each earned fourth in their respective running events, with Holtz’s mark of 23.10 seconds in the 200-meter and Pausma’s time of 1:59.61 in the 800-meter.

WOMEN’S TRACK AAND FIELD

MORRIS — The Martin Luther College outdoor women’s track and field team received second place (127 points) at the UMAC Championships on Friday and Saturday (May 3-4).

UW-Superior claimed first after scoring 183 points, but the Knights held their own in multiple categories in many throwing and running events.

Some notable results on day one came from Maya Habben, who came in second in the 3000-meter steeplechase (12:38.89), and Hope Sulzle who picked up third (12:56.55).

Naomi Foley tied for third place in the pole vault after jumping a distance of 2.63 meters. Meanwhile, Elise Nolte placed fifth in the hammer throw with a top throw of 38.49 meters.

On Saturday, Nolte had another solid showing in the shot put and had a personal record of 11.85 meters, while Madelinn Romsdahl got a fourth-place finish with a mark of 11.12 meters.

In the discus throw, Romsdahl took second (36.49 meters), while Ella Schlei placed third (35.77 meters).

Elena Brauer secured a second-place spot in the high jump after a mark of 1.52 meters, as Schlei also jumped 1.52 meters in the event.

Katelyn Mensching led MLC in a couple of long-distance events. The junior placed sixth in the 1500-meter run after clocking in a time of 5:12.96. Later on Saturday, Mensching followed up that performance with a fourth-place finish in the 5000-meter and earned a personal record mark of 20:10.62.

Additionally, Macie VanDenHeuvel hit a personal record distance in the triple jump (9.92 meters) that put her in fifth.
