Area roundup: Sleepy Eye softball sweeps St. Mary’s

PREP SOFTBALL

Sleepy Eye 12, St. Mary’s 2 (Game 1, 6 innings)

Sleepy Eye 17, St. Mary’s 2 (Game 2, 4 innings)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye took home a sweep of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Friday in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader, winning 12-2 in six innings in Game 1 and 17-2 in four innings in Game 2.

Katelyn Tauer was the winning pitcher in Game 1, striking out nine while allowing two runs on three hits. At the plate for the Indians, Julia Berkner was 2 for 2 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Paige Haala was 2 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Callie Evers and Tauer were each 2 for 5 with an RBI. Taylor Berkner also hit a two-run home run.

Taylor Mathiowetz took the loss for St. Mary’s, striking out four while allowing 12 earned runs on 11 hits. At the plate, Josie Helget, Addie Hoffmann and Nell Weiss each had a hit for the Knights.

Taylor Berkner took home the win in Game 2 for Sleepy Eye, striking out three while allowing two runs on five hits. Taylor Berkner also led the team on offense, going 4 for 4 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Evers was 3 for 3 with four runs scored, while Haala was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jaelynn Schauman added a home run with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Natalie Zarn took the loss for St. Mary’s, striking out one and allowing 16 earned runs on 19 hits. At the plate for the Knights, Hoffmann was 2 for 2 with an RBI and Weiss was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Sleepy Eye hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday. St. Mary’s hosts Springfield on Monday.

MLA/C 4, Madelia 1

MADELIA — Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey downed Madelia 4-1 in a Valley Conference softball game Friday.

Corban Tatro took the loss for Madelia , striking out five while allowing eight hits and three earned runs in a complete game. At the plate for the Blackhawks, Lauryn Grev had two hits, while Alicia Lugo had an RBI and Madelyn Lehman had a hit and a walk.

Madelia will host Cleveland on Tuesday.

LCWM 6, GSL 1 (Game 1)

LCWM 3, St. Cloud Cathedral 1 (Game 2)

MANKATO — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial defeated Glencoe-Silver Lake 6-1 and St. Cloud Cathedral 3-1 Friday in a softball tournament at Caswell Park.

Nettie Parsons got the win for the Knights in Game 1, striking out six while allowing five hits and one run. Sydney Kramer and Julia Montgomery led the Knights on offense, collecting two hits each.

Avery Voges got the win in Game 2, handing St. Cloud Cathedral their first loss on the season. Voges had five strikeouts and allowed two hits and one unearned run. Mongomery had three hits to lead the offense, while Rilee Penkert had two hits.

LCWM (12-0) will finish the tournament Saturday morning against Springfield at 10 a.m.

PREP TENNIS

New Ulm 4, BEA 3

BLUE EARTH — New Ulm defeated Blue Earth Area 4-3 in a Big South Conference boys tennis meet on Friday.

For New Ulm, No. 3 singles player Gideon Heins defeated Ryder Dutton 7-5, 6-1. New Ulm No. 4 singles Ian Schotzko downed Joseph Bautista 6-0, 6-0. No. 1 doubles players Joey Kotten and Dan Brownfield defeated Seth Mathews and Seth Stevermer 6-1, 6-1, and No. 3 doubles players Isaac Dittmer and Eli Dorschner defeated Noah Hanson and Mitchell Stevermer 6-0, 6-3.

New Ulm (7-3) travels to Prior Lake on Monday.
