New Ulm boys take 2nd at Big South event

ELMORE — The New Ulm boys golf team turned in one of its better performances of the season on Monday, finishing second in a Big South Conference Division Event at MinnIowa Golf Course.

The Eagles shot a 159, finishing behing St. Peter (146). Blue Earth Area took third (167), while Jackson County Central took fourth (167), Waseca took fifth (169) and Fairmont took sixth (174).

Four Eagles finished with top 20 scores at the meet, led by freshman Mason Buegler, who shot a 36. Brecken Neuman also turned in a top score for the Eagles and finished tied for fourth with a 37. Also for New Ulm, Brayden Wendinger tied for 17th (42), while Will Fossen tied for 19th (44). New Ulm’s Will Weidman finished just out of the top 20 with a 46, tying him for 23rd.

New Ulm girls take 5th in St. Peter

ST. PETER — The New Ulm girls golf team finished fifth in a Big South Conference Division Event on Monday at Shoreland Country Club.

Blue Earth Area took first at the event (182), followed by Waseca (214), St. Peter (219), Fairmont (224) and New Ulm (240). Jackson County Central was incomplete.

New Ulm was led by Elyse Dreckman’s 57, which tied her for 15th, while Brooklyn Hagberg, Sophia Cooke and Rory Gieseke all turned in a 61 to tie for 19th.

Cedar Mountain boys win at Winthrop

WINTHROP — The Cedar Mountain boys golf team defeated Winthrop 182-233 on Monday in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet.

Ryan Kevelin of Cedar Mountain was the medalist with a 42, while his teammate Blake Schueller shot a 43 to take second. Carson Schiller shot a 47, while Thomas Dahmes turned in a 50 to round of Cedar Mountain’s scores.

GFW was led by Cole Jacobson, who shot a 45, while Lane Olson shot a 58 to take second for the GFW boys.

All of the girls teams were incomplete, but the medalist was GFW’s Jenna Schweiss, who shot a 47. Wabasso also had two girls compete in the varsity side of the girls meet as Chloe Rohlik took second with a 52 and her teammate Shayna Huhnerkoch took third with a 63. Cedar Mountain’s top girls score was a 67 from Bailey Woodford.

MVL/NUC boys take 4th at St. Peter invite

ST. PETER — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys track and field team took fourth out of seven teams and the girls team placed fifth out of six teams at a track and field meet at St. Peter High School.

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop placed fifth in the boys meet and sixth in the girls meet.

St. Peter won the boys side of the meet with 146, while MVL/NUC had 104 points in fourth place and GFW had 67 points in fifth. Belle Plain won the girls side of the meet with 183.75, with MVL/NUC scoring 44.75 points and GFW took 29.5 points.

The MVL/NUC boys team was led by Ben Halvorson, who placed first in triple jump (40-8) and second in boys long jump (19). Will Kaesermann placed second in the boys 110-meter hurdles (15.91) and third in the boys triple jump (36-8.5), while Josh Bentler placed third in the boys 100 (11.78). The MVL/NUC boys 4×200 relay team of Bentler, Justin Thompson, Jared Frey and Ben Halvorson placed second (1:34.81), while Jaden Helget placed third on boys pole vault (10).

For the GFW boys, Alex Johnson took second in boys shot put (49-6) and discus (155-1) while Garret Schmidt placed third in the boys 110-meter hurdles. Easton Taylor placed third in boys long jump (18-10.5).

Emily Brown led the MVL/NUC girls team, placing second in the girls 100-meter hurdles (17.53) while Claudia Weisensel placed third in the girls 300-meter hurdles (51.78). Avery Hopp placed fourth in the girls 100 (13.88).

The GFW girls were led by Kinley Bruns, who placed second in the 100 (13.67) and third in the girls 200 (28.66). Trinity Stearns tied for fourth in high jump (4-8).

MVL/NUC and GFW compete at Sibley East on Thursday.
