Area roundup: Madelia scores 37 runs in rout of Alden-Conger

PREP BASEBALL

Madelia 37, AC/GE 3 (5 innings)

MADELIA — Madelia opened its baseball season with a football score on Thursday, rolling over Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons 37-3 in five innings in a Valley Conference baseball game.

Evan Coil led the Blackhawks with a 5-for-5 day at the plate, four RBIs and five runs scored, while Tony Zaleski was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, four runs scored and two walks. Tate Becker was 3 for 5 with six RBIs and four runs scored also for Madelia, while Jake Lehman was 2 for 3 with four RBIs, five runs scored and two walks, Zach Jacobs was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Carter Florez was 1 for 3 with four RBIs and four runs scored.

Zaleski got the win for Madelia on the mound, striking out seven.

The Blackhawks had 18 hits and committed one error, while AC/GE had two hits and 11 errors.

Madelia (1-0) hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in nonconference action at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

MVL 13, GFW 3 (5 innings)

FAIRFAX — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 13-3 in five innings of a Tomahawk Conference baseball opener Thursday.

Kaden Peterson led the Chargers at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, while Bradyn Kube and Josh Vanderplas each had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Kube got the win on the mound, while Zach Riederer pitched in relief. Kube struck out four in three innings and Riederer struck out five in two innings. The duo issued just four hits and one walk combined in the game.

MVL (1-0) has a doubleheader at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Monday.

Hutchinson 4, New Ulm 1

HUTCHINSON — Hutchinson defeated New Ulm 4-1 on Thursday in a nonconference baseball opener.

Kyle Albrecht had a hit and an RBI for New Ulm, while Blaine Olson pitched four innings and allowed one run while striking out three.

The Eagles (0-1) host Mankato West for a nonconference game at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Mueller Park.

Springfield 9, Wabasso 0

WABASSO — Jakob Nachreiner struck out 16 in a complete-game effort as the Springfield Tigers shut out Wabasso 9-0 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference baseball opener.

Nachreiner pitched all seven innings, allowing two hits and no walks.

Leading the Tigers at the plate was Brecken Heiling, who was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a double, while Lucas Milbrath was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Russell Beers was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Noah Neperman was 2 for 4.

Calvin Hanna and Jayden Remiger had Wabasso’s two hits in the game on a pair of singles. Joe Liebl took the loss in five innings for the Rabbits, allowing three hits and a walk for one earned run while fanning six.

Springfield (1-0) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a conference doubleheader on Monday, while Wabasso (0-1) hosts Sleepy Eye in a conference doubleheader Monday.

PREP SOFTBALL

Cathedral 5, Sleepy Eye 3

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral held off Sleepy Eye 5-3 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball opener.

Abbey Hillesheim got the win for Cathedral, striking out six and allowing 10 hits and four walks for two earned runs. Jaylin Hartness led the Greyhounds at the plate by going 2 for 4 with a run scored, while Alexa Hornick was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Jenna Hotovec was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a double.

Katelyn Tauer took the loss for Sleepy Eye, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out six. Nora Coulson led the Sleepy Eye bats, going 2 for 4 with a run scored, while Tauer was 2 for 4. Callie Evers was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Sleepy Eye (0-1) is at Mountain Lake on Friday for nonconference action, while Cathedral (1-0) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a conference doubleheader on Monday.

Springfield 3, Wabasso 2

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield held on to defeat Wabasso 3-2 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball opener.

Emma Hauger led the Tigers at the plate in the win, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double, while Abby Groebner added a hit and an RBI. Jalivia Richert got the win in the circle, allowing three hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out four in all seven innings.

Camryn Irlbeck and Macy Rohlik each doubled to lead Wabasso, while Rohlik added an RBI. Avery Carlson took the loss in the circle in six innings, allowing five hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out two.

Wabasso (0-1) travels to Sleepy Eye for a conference doubleheader on Monday, while Springfield (1-0) is at Winthrop for a conference doubleheader with Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

MVL/NUC boys take 1st at BEA Indoor Meet

MANKATO — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys track and field team took first at a Blue Earth Area Indoor Meet on Thursday at Myers Field House, scoring 109 points to finish ahead of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (76).

In third for the boys was BEA (47.5), followed by St, James Area (34.5) and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (23).

On the girls side, JWP took first with an 86, followed by SJA (60), MVL/NUC (58.5), BEA (48) and WEM (39.5).

Justin Thompson and Josh Bentler tied for fifth in the boys 55 (6.7), while Bentler and Ben Halvorson tied for fifth in the boys 200 (25.3). Thompson finished first in the boys 400 (56.5), while teammate Kendrick Henry took second in the event (57.3). Henry also took second in the boys 800 (2:22.7), while teammate Jeremy Feistner took third (2:22.9). Elliot Hoffman took first in the boys 1,600 (5:05.7), while Feistner took second (5:12.2). In the boys 55-meter hurdles, Will Kaesermann took first (8.2), while teammates Tucker Kohls took fourth (10.1) and Ethan Schauland took fifth (10.4). Kaesermann also took first in the boys 60 hurdles (7.8), while Schauland tied for second (9.4).

The MVL/NUC boys 4×200 relay team of Jaden Helget, Bentler, Jared Frey and Halvorson took first (1:40.2), while the MVL/NUC boys 4×400 relay team of Thompson, Frey, Hoffman and Will Kaesermann took first (3:50.4).

MVL/NUC also saw Benjamin Rossow take third in the boys shot put (38-2), while Helget took first in the boys pole vault (9-6), Schauland took fourth in the boys pole vault (7-6), Halvorson took second in the boys long jump (18-4), Henry took fifth in the boys long jump (17-2), Will Kaesermann took second in the boys triple jump (39-2) and Halvorson took fourth in the boys triple jump (37-2).

For the MVL/NUC girls, Averyelle Hopp tied for second in the girls 55 (7.8), while teammate Taylor Sommer tied for fourth (7.9). Hopp also took second in the girls 200 (28.9), while teammate Natalie Matzke took fifth in the girls 800 (3:03.9). MVL/NUC’s Emily Brown took second in the girls 55 hurdles (9.6), while teammates Avery Freier took third (9.9) and Claudia Weisensel took fourth (10.4). Brown also took first in the girls 60 hurdles (9.4), while Weisensel took second (10.1). The MVL/NUC girls 4×200 relay team of Brown, Sommer, Freier and Hopp took first (1:56.5).

MVL/NUC’s Mackenzie Frank took fourth in the girls shot put (28-11), while Hopp took fourth in the girls long jump (13-4), Ellie Kaesermann took fourth in the girls triple jump (28-5.5) and Brown took fifth in the girls triple jump (27-7).
