Area roundup: Wabasso clinches share of conference title with sweep of Springfield

Wabasso 3, Springfield 0

SPRINGFIELD — Wabasso swept Springfield 25-9, 25-21, 25-23 Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

With the win, Wabasso clinches a share of the Tomahawk Conference Championship with a 7-1 record in conference.

Alivia Olson had 15 kills for the Rabbits, while Camryn Irlbeck had eight kills and four blocks. Sara Carlson had 40 set assists, three aces and two blocks, while Avery Carlson and Audrey Johnson had 14 digs each.

No stats were reported for Springfield.

Wabasso (15-9, 7-1) travels to Renville County West on Monday. Springfield (3-10, 1-5) hosts Redwood Valley on Thursday night.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Sleepy Eye 3, Cedar Mountain 1

MORGAN — Sleepy Eye held on for a 25-18, 25-13, 17-25, 25-23 win over Cedar Mountain on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Kadence Hesse led the Indians in the win with 10 kills, 11 digs, four blocks and three aces, while Breaunna Mertz had nine kills, eight digs and six blocks. Paige Haala added eight kills, 20 digs, three blocks and three aces for Sleepy Eye, while Sam Price had 13 kills and Lydia Helget had 34 set assists and 12 digs.

Cedar Mountain was led by Hailey Hollar’s 16 kills and 17 digs, while Aubrey Steffl had 10 kills and 13 digs, Kendra Erickson had five kills and 30 set assists and Lauren Baringer had 15 digs.

Sleepy Eye (15-5, 5-2) plays a nonconference match at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday, while Cedar Mountain (14-6, 5-2) is at New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday night for its final conference match of the season.

GFW 3, Lester Prairie 0

LESTER PRAIRIE — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Lester Prairie 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 in a nonconference volleyball match Tuesday.

Taylor Schafer had 12 kills and 19 digs for the Thunderbirds, while Marti Jacobson had eight kills. Katelyn Beranek added 31 set assists and an ace for GFW.

GFW (7-9, 1-6) plays in the Southwest Minnesota State tournament in Marshall on Friday.

BLHS 3, MVL 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-16, 25-11, 25-17 Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Ava Munsen lead the Chargers with eight kills and a block, while Gabbie Bleick had seven kills, three digs and a block. Mackenzie Merseth had 17 digs and a kill, while Kerigan Brau had 21 set assists, two kills and six digs.

MVL (7-13, 3-4) hosts Springfield on Tuesday. BLHS (21-4, 6-1) gets a chance at a share of the conference title as they travel to Sleepy Eye on Tuesday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Prior Lake 7, New Ulm 0

PRIOR LAKE — Prior Lake shut out New Ulm 7-0 on Tuesday in a Section 2AA Girls Tennis Tournament matchup.

At No. 1 singles, Sofia Livingston defeated Karlee Prahl 6-4, 6-0, while Shelby Gambucci defeated Lydia King 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Chloe Soundava defeated Carmen Schotzko 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Delaney Dahl defeated Tayor Hauenstein 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Emily Eism and Victoria Cvancara defeated Lana Braun and Peyton Kveno 6-0, 6-0, while Rose Netz and Olivia Neman defeated Lexi Schneider and Aubrey Demarais at No. 2 doubles and Maren Buettner and Ava Becker defeated Hannah Davey and Morgan Hauenstein 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The individual tournament begins next week.

GIRLS SOCCER

New Ulm 5, Worthington 1

WORTHINGTON — New Ulm took down Worthington 5-1 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference girls soccer match.

Jesalyn Skoglund scored first for New Ulm in the fourth minute, while Yanellie Fernandez put the Eagles up 2-0 in the eighth minute and Kaelyn Eikanger scored in the 29th minute to make it a 3-0 New Ulm lead at halftime. Skoglund scored again for New Ulm in the second half, while Anna Kramer had a goal to complete the scoring for New Ulm.

Ariana Dreyer had a save for New Ulm in net, while Betsy Joyce had two saves.

New Ulm is at Marshall on Thursday.
