NUHS boys take 3rd, girls 4th at Waseca Invite

WASECA — New Ulm High School’s Emily Pearson set a school record in the pole vault on Thursday at a Waseca Track and Field Invite.

Pearson’s efforts helped the New Ulm girls finish fourth with 79 points, while the New Ulm boys took third with 104 points. The Waseca girls and boys both won their side of the invite with a 155.9 and 171 points, respectively.

Pearson set the record mark with a top jump of 11 feet, 3 inches, passing last season’s personal best of of 11 feet, 1 inch. She broke the school record last year also with that 11-1 jump.

Pearson’s jump Thursday gave her a first-place finish in the girls pole vault. She also finished fourth in the 100 on Thursday with a time of 14.22 seconds.

Also for the New Ulm girls, Kaelyn Eikanger finished second in the 400 (1:07.3), while Ella Ahrens took first in the 800 (2:28.39), Kiyla Kolden took third in the 1,600 (6:26.64) and Keira Holberg took third in the triple jump (30-0.5).

For the New Ulm boys, Cole Frederick finished third in the 200-meter dash (25.41), while Easton Clark (54.67) and James Osborne (54.68) finished first and second in the 400-meter dash respectively. Jamisen Frederickson finished third in the 3200-meter race (12:37.31), while the 4×400 relay team of Clark, Osborne, Nickolas Zins and Collin Horning finished first (3:39.35). Nathan Wolkow finished first in discus (123-10), and Ethan Lieb finished second for high jump (5-10). Marqavion Haefner finished second in the pole vault (12-0), and Clark finished second in the long jump (18-10.75).

PREP SOFTBALL

MVL 12, GHEC 1 (5 innings)

TRUMAN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran cruised to a 12-1 win over Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Thursday in five innings of nonconference softball action.

Becca Kuck pitched all five innings and allowed one hit and no walks for one unearned run while striking out 11. She was also 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI.

Lexi Meunier was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored also for the Chargers, while Sophie Dalueg was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Ashlyn Rodewald was 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

MVL awaits playoffs next week.

New Ulm 5, St. Peter 0

ST. PETER — New Ulm shut out St. Peter 5-0 on Thursday in a Big South Conference softball game.

Ramsey Hopp pitched a one-hitter, allowing two walks and striking out five. She was also 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI, while Maddie Backer was 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored, a walk and three stolen bases. Lauren Schmiesing was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases and a run scored.

New Ulm moves to 12-5 on the season with the win.

Nicollet 11, GFW 1

NICOLLET — Nicollet defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 11-1 in five innings of nonconference softball action on Thursday.

Nicollet was led by Hattie Hansen, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Sam Kettner was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Leah Bode was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs. Ellie Matter was 2 for 3 with a double also for the Raiders. Emma Drill pitched all five innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out three.

GFW was led at the plate by Katelyn Beranek, who was 2 for 3, while Taylor Schafer was 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored. Halle Bleick took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 14 hits while striking out one.

Both teams await section playoffs next week.

Wabasso 8, TMB 0

Wabasso 5, LQPV 1

WABASSO — Wabasso opened a home softball invite with an 8-0 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Tuesday before downing Lac Qui Parle Valley 5-1 to end the day.

Kylee Fogelson had a two-run double to lead the Rabbits at the plate, while Callie Burns was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Sophia Hanna doubled and had an RBI and Kelsey Frank had a triple and an RBI. Avery Carlson got the complete-game win, giving up five hits and no walks while striking out six.

In the second game of the day, Sara Carlson led the Wabasso bats by going 3 for 3 with two doubles. Frank was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Sophia Hanna was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Avery Carlson pitched all seven innings in the win, allowing four hits and two walks for one earned run while fanning five.

Wabasso (11-6) hosts an invite Friday.

Springfield 11, LQPV 0 (6 innings)

WABASSO — Springfield took down Lac qui Parle Valley 11-0 in a nonconference softball game on Thursday.

Jalivia Richert earned the win for the Tigers, getting nine strikeouts and allowing one hit in six innings pitched. At the plate for Springfield, Brenna Pabst was 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Maddy Digmann was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jaeli Richert was 2 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Rachel Beadell was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Springfield (12-8, 6-6) is scheduled to host a section playoff game on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 14, MCW 7

WELCOME — Sleepy Eye defeated Martin County West 14-7 and Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman 7-3 in a nonconference softball game on Thursday.

Katelyn Tauer picked up the win for the Indians, getting 10 strikeouts and allowing seven hits.

At the plate for Sleepy Eye, Taylor Berkner was 4 for 5 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Brooke Arneson was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Brissa Hernandez was 2 for 3 with a double, a runs scored and an RBI, while Tauer had a home run and three RBIs.

Sleepy Eye 7, GHEC/ML/T 3

TRUMAN — Sleepy Eye downed Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman 7-3 in a nonconference softball game on Thursday.

Taylor Berkner earned the win for Sleepy Eye, getting eight strikeouts and allowing three hits. At the plate, Brooke Arneson was 4 for 4, just a home run shy of hitting the cycle and getting an RBI and three runs scored. Paige Haala was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye finishes out their regular season with a 10-8 record.

MLA 7, Madelia 0

SEARLES — Mountain Lake Area shut out Madelia 7-0 on Thursday in a nonconference softball game.

Abby Jacobs and Makayla Sorenson each had a single for the Blackhawks in defeat, with Jacobs also drawing a walk. Corban Tatro took the complete-game loss in the circle, allowing eight hits and two walks for seven runs, one earned. She struck out 13.

Madelia (4-14) is at Caswell Park Friday for a Valley Conference Showcase game against Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther.

PREP BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 4, GHEC 1

STARK — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 4-1 on Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at Stark Ballpark.

Mark Anderson went 1 for 3 with a triple and an RBI for the Knights in the win, while Jonny Petermann was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Brandon Schmitz was 1 for 2. Talan Helget was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored also for the Knights.

Anderson got the win in five innings of work, giving up one earned run on seven walks and one hit while striking out 10. Wyatt Pollard pitched two innings of relief to earn the save, allowing no hits, walks or runs while striking out two.

St. Mary’s hosts Mankato Loyola on Friday.

Sleepy Eye 6, Redwood Valley 3

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye topped Redwood Valley 6-3 on Thursday in a nonconference baseball game.

Cody Schultz led the Indians at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a home run and two runs scored. Arian Saenz was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double and also got the win on the mound in five innings, striking out six while walking six and giving up three hits for two earned runs. Kaleb Butenhoff pitched two innings of relief and gave up one unearned run, one walk and one hit while striking out three.

Sleepy Eye plays St. Clair on Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Springfield 5, Loyola 3

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield took down Loyola 5-3 in a nonconference baseball game on Thursday.

Sam Rummel eared the win for the Tigers, getting six strikeouts and allowing six hits and one earned run in five innings pitched. On offense for Springfield, Luke Boyle was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Ashtin Johnson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Kade Nachreiner was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Springfield hosts Jackson County Central on Tuesday.

Cleveland 2, Cathedral 0

CLEVELAND — Cleveland held off New Ulm Cathedral 2-0 on Wednesday in a nonconference softball game.

Cathedral was led by Kiah Helget, who was 2 for 3. Madelyn Haala took the loss, allowing 11 hits and a walk while striking out four.
