WABASSO — Wabasso shut out New Ulm Cathedral 1-0 in Game 1 of a Tomahawk Conference doubleheader on Monday before the Greyhounds returned the favor with a 4-0 shutout in the nightcap.
In a Game 1 pitchers’ duel, Wabasso’s Adryen Tietz bested Carter Haala on the mound. Tietz pitched all seven innings of the shutout, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 11.
Haala took the loss as Wabasso’s walked it off with a single in the bottom of the seventh. Haala pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and two walks for an unearned run while fanning 12.
Tietz also delivered the game-winning RBI triple for the Rabbits into center field. Joe Liebl, Jayden Remiger and Treydon Larson had Wabasso’s other hits in the game.
Brock Wellman and Matt Seidl had a single each for the Greyhounds’ hits in Game 1.
In Game 2, Levi Franta got the complete-game win on the mound, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out 14.
Liebl took the loss for the Rabbits, giving up three hits and two walks for three earned runs while fanning six. Noah Anderson pitched an inning of relief for Wabasso in Game 2 and struck out one.
Franta also had two hits, including a double, to lead the Greyhounds at the plate in Game 2, while Thomas Finstad had a hit and two RBIs.
Wabasso’s Anderson, Tietz and Liebl each singled in the Game 2 loss.
Wabasso is at Sleepy Eye for a 7 p.m. conference game on Tuesday, while Cathedral travels for a doubleheader on Thursday in Fairfax.
GFW 11, RCW 1 (5 innings)
GIBBON — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop slammed Renville County West 11-1 in five innings of nonconference baseball on Monday.
Justin Hoffmann led the way for GFW at the plate with a grand slam in the bottom of the second. Mikal Nordlund followed the grand slam with a solo homer for a 5-0 GFW lead.
Zach Schwarzrock got the win in four innings, giving up one hit and no walks while striking out six.
Carter Rice took the loss, giving up five hits and eight runs while fanning two.
GFW (1-1) is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for a conference game Tuesday before hosting New Ulm Cathedral for a doubleheader on Thursday in Fairfax.
Springfield 5, MVL 3 (Game 1)
MVL 9, Springfield 5 (Game 2)
SPRINGFIELD — Springfield split with Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader on Monday, winning Game 1 by a score of 5-3 and losing Game 2 by a score of 9-5 at Riverside Park.
Jakob Nachreiner was 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Tigers at the plate in Game 1, while Kade Nachreiner was 2 for 4 and MaCoy Krick doubled. Ethan Louwagie got the win for the Tigers in 5 2/3 innings of work, giving up two hits and four walks for one earned run while fanning four.
Kyan Kube took the loss for MVL in Game 1 in four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two. Cole Thompson doubled, while Kaden Peterson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
In Game 2, Krick was 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and an RBI to lead Springfield, while Danny Rogotzke and Ashtin Johnson each went 2 for 4. Noah Neperman took the loss in Game 2, giving up seven runs in 1/3 innings of work on four hits and three walks.
Josh VanderPlas got the win on the mound for MVL in Game 2, giving up two hits and a walk in two innings of work. Peterson was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks to lead MVL at the plate. Jensen Gerdts also had a hit, two walks and two RBIs for MVL in Game 2.
MVL hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for a conference doubleheader on Thursday at Johnson Park, while Springfield is at Sleepy Eye for a conference doubleheader Thursday.
PREP SOFTBALL
Edgerton 3, Wabasso 2
EDGERTON — Edgerton edged Wabasso 3-2 on Monday in nonconference softball action.
Avery Carlson took the loss for the Rabbits, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
Macy Rohlik had a single and an RBI for Wabasso at the plate, while Kelsey Frank and Annabelle Struntz each had a single.
Wabasso is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for a 5 p.m. Tomahawk Conference game Tuesday.
PREP GOLF
Cedar Mountain boys 203, GFW 221, Wabasso Inc.
WINTHROP — The Cedar Mountain boys golf team earned a 203-221 Tomahawk Conference golf win over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday at Winthrop Golf Course.
The Wabasso boys were incomplete.
Cedar Mountain was the only girls teams with four golfers, while the Wabasso and GFW girls both were incomplete.
Blake Schueller of Cedar Mountain was the medalist with a 46, while Carter Schiller followed his teammate with a 47. Cedar Mountain’s Kegan Tietz shot a 52 for third, while GFW’s Cole Jacobson turned in a 53 and GFW’s Carson Lee shot a 54. GFW’s Lane Olson and Wabasso’s Aidan Lanoue each shot a 56.
Cedar Mountain’s Keanna Hultquist was the girls medalist with a 55, while GFW’s Jenna Schweiss shot a 59 and Wabasso’s Shayana Huhnerkoch shot a 62. Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik shot a 63.
New Ulm boys take 5th, girls tie for 5th at Big South East Event
FAIRMONT/WASECA — The New Ulm boys golf team took fifth with a 182 at the first Big South Conference East Division Event in Fairmont on Monday, while the New Ulm girls tied for fifth at the Big South Conference East Division Event in Waseca.
Mason Buegler led the New Ulm boys, shooting a 42 for a sixth-place finish. Will Fossen followed Buegler with a 45 to tie for 15th.
Katie Wilker led the New Ulm girls in Waseca with a 53, tying her for 11th. New Ulm’s Brooklyn Hagberg shot a 62 to finish 21st overall.
BOYS TENNIS
New Ulm 4, SJA 3
ST. JAMES — The doubles teams played a big role again for New Ulm in a 4-3 Big South Conference boys tennis win over St. James Area on Monday.
The Eagles moved to 5-0 on the year in dual play with the win.
Getting wins for New Ulm was No. 3 singles player Thomas Schwartz, who defeated Xander Brown 6-1, 6-2, and No. 4 singles player Keenan Davis, who defeated Quinton Kern 6-2, 6-3.
New Ulm’s No. 1 doubles team was defeated, but the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams did enough to secure New Ulm’s win on the day. The No. 2 doubles team of Aaron Black and Rylan O’Neill defeated Devon Olson and Dylan Reid 6-4, 6-3, while the No. 3 doubles team of Gideon Heins and Joey Kotten defeated Rylan Meyer and Noah Saur 6-2, 7-5.
New Ulm hosts St. Peter on Tuesday.
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
MVL/NUC boys take 5th, girls 6th in St. Peter
ST. PETER — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys track and field team finished fifth out of eight teams with an 82 on Monday at a St. Peter track and field meet, while the girls finished sixth out of eight teams with a 39.
Leading the MVL/NUC boys, Ben Halvorson took fifth in the 200-meter dash (24.5), while Will Kaesermann took second in the 110 hurdles (16.06), second in the 300 hurdles (44.82) and first in the triple jump (40-5.5). The MVL/NUC boys 4×200-meter relay team of Jared Grey, Halvorson, Kaesermann and Justin Thompson also took second (1:38.54), while Jaden Helget took second in the pole vault (9-0).
The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop boys also competed at the meet and took seventh. The GFW boys were led by Justin Messner (54.69, 400, fifth), Garrett Schmidt (16.86, 110 hurdles, fourth; 44.94, 300 hurdles, third; 20-5, long jump, first) and Alex Johnson (41-5.5, shot put, third; 111-7, discus, fifth).
Leading the MVL/NUC girls were Averyelle Hopp (13.61, 100, fifth; 28.44, 200, third; 14-9, long jump, third) and Claudia Weisensel (18.12, 100 hurdles, fourth; 52.81, 300 hurdles, second).
COLLEGE BASEBALL

NEW ULM — Crown swept Martin Luther College 19-2 and 14-4 on Monday in a Upper Midwest Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Monday.
The games were supposed to be played on the campus of Crown last week but were rescheduled to play at New Ulm on Monday.
In the Game 1 loss, Mason Cox and Jackson Lindemann each had a hit and an RBI for the Knights. Lindemann took the loss, allowing 14 hits and five walks for 17 runs while striking out one. Aaron Bode pitched two innings of relief for MLC in Game 1, giving up two runs on four walks.
In the Game 2 loss, Christian Bachenberg was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead MLC at the plate, while Sam Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs.
Carter Seltz took the loss on the mound, allowing 11 hits and seven walks for 11 runs while striking out one in four innings. Zach Clement pitched two innings of relief, giving up five hits and two walks for three runs.
MLC (3-15, 0-10) is at Bethany Lutheran College on Tuesday.
