Area roundup: Chargers sweep Wolverines in softball doubleheader

MVL 12, SIBLEY EAST 1 (GAME 1)

MVL 13, SIBLEY EAST 3 (GAME 2, 5 INNINGS)

ARLINGTON — Minnesota Valley Lutheran swept Sibley East in a South Central Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday, winning 12-1 in Game 1 and 13-3 in a five-inning Game 2.

In Game 1, Katlyn Stadick got the win in all seven innings, allowing four hits and a walk for one unearned run while striking out three. She also was 2 for 5 at the plate, while Nora Grace Otto led the MVL bats with a 4-for-4 game, which included a double and four RBIs. Kenzie Graham was 3 for 3 with a double also in the Game 1 win, while Grace Onken was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

In Game 2, Otto got the win in four innings, allowing three hits and three walks for two earned runs while striking out three. Norah Rodewald pitched the fifth inning and allowed no hits, walks or runs. Taryn Gunderson was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead MVL at the plate in Game 2, while Sophia Dalueg was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Graham was 2 for 4 with a double.

MVL (3-3) hosts Medford on Monday.

NICOLLET 16, MADELIA 4

MADELIA — Nicollet downed Madelia 16-4 on Tuesday in a Valley Division softball game.

Nicollet was led by Madison Kettner, who was 5 for 5 with two homers, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Jazmyn Goettlicher was 3 for 5 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored. Zoie Rengstorf was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Chloe Kachelmeier was 2 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Breah Hendrickson tripled and scored two runs. Brielle Osborne pitched all seven innings and allowed four earned runs on two hits and seven walks while striking out five.

Lauryn Grev was 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Madelia. Emily Jacobs took the loss in five innings, allowing eight hits and a walk for six earned runs while striking out one.

Nicollet (7-1) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther in a Valley Division game on Thursday, while Madelia (2-5) is at Martin County West for a Valley game on Thursday.

ST. MARY’S 15, MLA 6

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s took down Mountain Lake Area 15-6 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Sidney Tauer was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Knights in the win, while Joslyn Sellner was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Taylor Mathiowetz was 2 for 5 with an RBI and Rivers Helget was 2 for 5. Natalie Zarn got the complete-game win, striking out six while allowing seven hits and a walk.

St. Mary’s (1-2) hosts Wabasso in a Tomahawk doubleheader on Thursday.

REDWOOD VALLEY 6, SLEEPY EYE 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye fell to Redwood Valley 6-0 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Taylor Berkner took the loss in six innings, allowing seven walks and three earned runs while striking out eight. Kenley Jensen was 1 for 2 with a double to lead Sleepy Eye.

SLEEPY EYE 3, WABASSO 1

SLEEPY EYE — After falling to Redwood Valley, Sleepy Eye ended its night with a key Tomahawk Division softball win over Wabasso, defeating the Rabbits 3-1.

Berkner got the complete-game win, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out 13. She was also 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Jaelynn Schauman was 1 for 2 with an RBI and run scored and Callie Evers doubled and had an RBI.

Wabasso’s one hit came from Kayleigha Johnson. Aylah Jenniges took the loss in six innings, allowing five hits and four walks for two earned runs while striking out eight.

Sleepy Eye (5-1) has a Tomahawk doubleheader at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday in Winthrop. Wabasso (4-1) is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for a Tomahawk doubleheader Thursday.

WINDOM 11, SPRINGFIELD 4

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield fell to Windom 11-4 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Makay Winkelmann led the Tigers in the loss, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Isabella Groebner was 2 for 4 with a triple and Abby Groebner doubled and added an RBI. Regan Beadell took the complete-game loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits and two walks for seven earned runs while striking out one.

Springfield (3-1) is at Lester Prairie for a Tomahawk Division doubleheader on Thursday.

PREP BASEBALL

BELLE PLAINE 4, NEW ULM 3

BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine walked off New Ulm 4-3 in a Big South Conference baseball game on Tuesday.

Belle Plaine’s Reed Creighton hit an RBI double to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Mitchell Hopp made the start for New Ulm, striking out five while allowing two runs, none earned, on six hits in six innings pitched. At the plate, Ryan Rathmann was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Dirk Haynes had two hits. Zach Hubbard added a hit and an RBI.

New Ulm (3-1) hosts Worthington on Thursday.

SPRINGFIELD BOYS 164, BLHS BOYS 209

SPRINGFIELD GIRLS 195, BLHS GIRLS INC.

BUFFALO LAKE — The Springfield boys downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 209-164 in a Tomahawk Division golf meet on Tuesday.

The Springfield girls scored a 195, while the BLHS girls were incomplete.

Springfield’s Erik Davis was the medalist on the boys side, scoring a 38. He was followed by Springfield’s Braxton Brown (40) Dylan Simonson (41), Colten Sell (45), and Tayte Zihlke (48). Brady Rudeen led the Mustangs with a 49, while tammate Chet Macik had a 52.

Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann led the girls with a 44, followed by Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky, BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht, Springfield’s Kynslee Kastner and Annie Kuehn (53) and BLHS’s Elizabeth Ovitt (55).

LESTER PRAIRIE — New Ulm Cathedral shut out Lester Prairie 16-0 in five innings on Monday in a Tomahawk Division softball game.

Leah Wilson was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Cathedral at the plate, while Thea Paszkiewicz was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Brynn Wilfahrt was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs and Margo Finstad was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Jayde Altermatt got the win in five innings, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out five.

JCC 5, CATHEDRAL 3 (GAME 1)

JCC 12, CATHEDRAL 2 (GAME 2, 6 INNINGS)

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral was swept in a nonconference softball doubleheader on Friday, falling to Jackson County Central 5-3 in Game 1 and 12-2 in Game 2 in six innings.

Brynn Wilfahrt had Cathedral’s lone hit in Game 1, while Shay Wilfahrt drew two walks. Jayde Altermatt took the complete-game loss, allowing five hits and three walks for two earned runs while striking out nine.

In Game 2, Ashlyn Hillsesheim and Leah Wilson each went 2 for 3 to lead the Greyhounds, while Ava Schmid and Thea Paszkiewicz each doubled and drove in a run. Ashlyn Hillesheim took the loss from the circle in four innings, allowing five hits and six walks for three earned runs while striking out four.
