NEW ULM — After coming up a match short in its home opener last Friday, New Ulm wasted little time making up for it in its second home meet of the year.

In fact, it took the Eagles just one hour to get the job done Tuesday at New Ulm High School.

With two-set matches across the board, the Eagles shut out the Yellow Medicine East Sting 7-0 in a nonconference boys tennis meet.

Charlie Weidman was back at No. 1 singles for New Ulm after missing this past Friday’s meet, a 4-3 loss to Waconia. He was also back for a meet with Farmington in New Prague on Monday, but Riley Watson got the better of him there with a 6-1, 6-3 win.

On Tuesday, Weidman dropped just one game as he defeated Liam Hadfield 6-0, 6-1.

Weidman said his forehand hasn’t been working the best for him lately, something Watson took advantage of, but he didn’t need to worry much about it against Liam Hadfield as his serve and backhand carried him through the match.

“I’m kind of struggling with my forehand right now, so players are able to recognize that and kind of capitalize on it,” Weidman said. “But I don’t think [Liam Hadfield] picked up on it too much, and he’s a younger player, so I think that helped.”

At No. 2 singles, Dan Brownfield continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Talmage Hadfield. Brownfield won at No. 1 singles last Friday in place of Weidman and is now 4-0 on the season.

New Ulm was perfect at No. 3 and 4 singles. At No. 3 singles, Isaac Dittmer defeated Evan Christianson 6-0, 6-0, while Griffin Lehne defeated Adrian Leske 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Wyatt Feucht and Thomas Lehne defeated Cyril Chase-Pendleton and Leonard Rosenau 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Everett Brown and Ryan Johnson rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hlaing Aung and Elliot Lingle. Johnson played at No. 4 singles in the Eagles’ home opener but was back with Brown on Monday and Tuesday.

Johnson said jumping up to singles was an endurance test for him Friday.

“Playing by yourself, you have to run for everything,” he said. “You have to get all the balls and every mistake, it’s on you, so I think it’s a lot of the mental in singles. I respect Charlie and Daniel and all them who do singles every day.”

While he had fun at singles, he was happy to be back with Brown this week.

“I am [happy],” Johnson said. “I think we get a little teamwork and it’s fun.”

Brown has been just as happy working together with Johnson at No. 2 doubles.

“It’s been a blast,” Brown said. “Personally, us two playing together, we’re undefeated, so that’s pretty cool. It’s a good momentum to keep going. We love laughing at each other, even if we make a mistake, we just brush it off and move on to the next point. It’s been great.”

Brown said he and Johnson have had some close calls this season, but their friendship makes it easy to bounce back after mistakes.

“We both like to get in our heads a lot,” Brown said. “We have a lot of inside jokes, we’re good buddies in theater, so we try to drag ourselves out of that when we play, and it’s been working. We’ve had some great comebacks this season, we’ve been down in our heads and then were able to pull ourselves up from the ground and get our wins.”

There wasn’t anything to battle back from on Tuesday, but the duo was more than happy with their shutout.

At No. 3 doubles, Hayden Owens and Cole Frederick defeated Lucas Canatsey and Luke Hauger 6-3, 6-0.

The Eagles, now 3-1 on the season, travel to Victoria to take on Holy Family Catholic in another nonconference meet Thursday.

Starting at $4.50/week.
