Column: New Ulm juniors rising in career scoring rankings

Four local high school players — all of them juniors — are moving up in the scoring annals of high school sports in New Ulm, and one of them may soon achieve 1,000 career points in basketball.

Jevan Wilfahrt of New Ulm Cathedral currently has 957 career basketball points, with two home games coming this weekend.

The Greyhounds host Sleepy Eye Public on Friday night before playing Wabasso Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

When Wilfahrt does score 43 more points, he will become the 50th high school player in New Ulm to break the 1,000 career mark and will join New Ulm High School’s Colton Benson — also a junior — as local players to break that barrier this season.

Benson, after his 21 point performance against Tri-City United, now has 1,136 career points, passing his teammate from last year, Charlie Osborne, who scored 1,135 points in his career at NUHS.

Benson is now 29th on the carer scoring leaders for high schools in New Ulm.

The Eagles host Worthington Thursday night in a Big South Conference game.

Also approaching the 1,000 point club is Daviney Dreckman, who currently has 891 career points with seven regular season games to go for the New Ulm High School girls basketball team.

Upon hitting 1,000 points, she will become just the fourth Eagles girls basketball player to do so.

New Ulm High School hockey forward Austin Uecker has 107 career points for the Eagles. This places him in 18th place in total career points for hockey, 1 point behind both Brenton Clyne and Chad Roeder and 6 points behind Colin Huffman.

The Eagles play at Windom Friday before hosting Litchfield-Dassel/Cokato Tuesday at the New Ulm Civic Center.

NEW ULM TO HOST TWO STATE HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS

The New Ulm Civic Center will host both the PeeWee A and PeeWee AA state tournaments Mar. 17-19.

Both tournaments will have eight teams entered. Teams will arrive in New Ulm on March 16th for their banquets.

The PeeWee A banquet will be at Turner Hall with the PeeWee AA banquet being held at the New Ulm Event Center.

Guest speaker for both banquets will be former Gopher and professional hockey player Erik Westrum.

WENNINGER MAKES HALL OF FAME

Former New Ulmite Mike Wenninger, who coached high school baseball in Luverne for 25 years, was inducted into the Minnesota High School Coaches Hall of Fame on Jan. 14. Wenninger ended with a record of 377-166 for the Cardinals.

Wenninger played baseball for the Eagles from 1990 and 1991 before graduating from South Dakota State where he continued his baseball career.
