NEW ULM — A wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh helped New Ulm Silver edge Chaska 4-3 on Friday in the elimination bracket of the District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament.

Ayden Gostonczik belted a single to center field to start the bottom of the seventh inning. He went to second on Caleb Forstner’s sacrifice. Gostonczik advanced to third on Cullen Slette’s sacrifice.

Gostonczik then scored on a wild pitch by Ashton Blake, racing to the plate and sliding in for the winning run.

“The way they played all day; I’m immensely proud of them,” Silver head coach Mark Grossman said.

Earlier in the day, Silver scored four runs in the seventh but came up short as it fell to Sleepy Eye 5-4.

Silver scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Lewandowski and Kolton Achman drew back-to-back walks. Lewandowski scored on Preston Holberg’s single and Achman scored on Graham Gaser’s single. Silver led 2-0.

Chaska scored one run in the top of the third inning. Logan Grinnell singled and scored on Joseph Nelson’s double, which made it 2-1 Silver.

Silver’s defense turned a huge double play in the top of the fifth inning. Jackson Richardson walked. He was on third base and tried to score on a popout by Ryan Sheetz. Silver right fielder Ian Brudlie threw a rocket to Holberg, who tagged out Richardson at home plate for the third out.

“That double play with the bases loaded was a huge play, and it changed the game,” Grossman said.

Chaska took the lead in the top of the sixth. Wyatt Auseth’s single and Ashton Blake’s double eventually led to Auseth scoring on a Silver error. Blake scored on a sacrifice. That resulted in a 3-2 advantage for Chaska.

Silver tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lewandowski singled. Courtesy runner Brock Carlson took first base and later scored on a Chaska error.

Chaska had a number of chances to score throughout the game. It stranded 11 runners. Despite Silver committing three errors, it only stranded six runners.

Both teams had seven hits.

Jaxon Buegler was the winning pitcher for Silver, while Blake took the loss for Chaska.

Silver will now face Sleepy Eye at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Johnson Park.
