New Ulm holds off New Prague rally

MARSHALL — Things got interesting for the New Ulm Junior Legion Gold late in Wednesday’s DI Junior Legion Sub-State G Baseball Tournament semifinals game, but the Junior Gold were able to hang on for a 7-6 win in the end at American Legion Field.
New Ulm held a 7-0 run entering the bottom of the seventh, but New Prague scored six runs in the inning before reliever Owen Castleman got a strikeout to earn the save.
The win moves New Ulm on to a 2 p.m. final game Thursday at American Legion Field. A win there would move New Ulm on to the state tournament, while a loss would prompt a second and final championship game on Friday at American Legion Field.
New Ulm will play the winner of the Marshall-New Prague elimination bracket finals game, which begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at American Legion Field.
Owen Castleman also led the Junior Gold at the plate on Wednesday, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Trevan Thordson was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Mitchell Hopp was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Miles Castleman also had a double and an RBI.
Miles Castleman got the start on the mound for New Ulm and earned the win, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five hits and six walks for two earned runs while striking out four. He threw 104 pitches.
Four runs scored after an error in the seventh, allowing New Prague to close the distance, but Owen Castleman got the final two outs on strikeouts. He allowed two hits and no runs.
