NEW ULM — For the second day in a row, Minnesota Valley Lutheran got quality pitching and defense to guide them to victory.

After a 5-1 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday, the Chargers continued to roll with a 7-2 win over Nicollet on Tuesday at Johnson Park in a nonconference baseball game.

Bradyn Kube got the win for the Chargers on Tuesday, pitching five innings and allowing just two hits and a walk for no runs. He struck out six.

Dominic Rosin took the loss for the Raiders in six innings, giving up six hits and three walks for three earned runs while fanning 11. Nicollet committed four errors in the game.

The Chargers played error-free baseball up until the seventh inning, where the Raiders scored both of their runs. Rosin took a one-out walk before Nick Slater grounded into a potential double-play spot at shortstop. The throw went into the outfield, though, as Rosin moved to third and Slater took first.

A stolen base by Slater ended in a throw from home into the outfield to score Rosin for Nicollet’s first run, and Slater came home moments later on a wild pitch. Zach Riederer pitched the final two innings for MVL and allowed two walks and no hits for no earned runs while striking out two.

Before that seventh inning, MVL cruised at the plate and in the field. An RBI single by Riederer in the bottom of the first scored Kaden Peterson for a 1-0 MVL lead.

MVL added two more runs in the third on a two-run single by Josh Giefer and another run in the fourth on an error. The Chargers got an RBI single from Selvey in the fifth inning that ended up in a second run after a a throwing error to first.

The Chargers got their final run of the game in the sixth on a sac fly off the bat of Cole Thompson to score Kaiden Hammerschmidt.

Hammerschmidt was 2 for 3 for MVL, while Giefer was 2 for 4 with a double and Peterson was 2 for 4.

Joe Ogden and Trenton Havemeier each had a single for Nicollet’s two hits in the game, with both coming in the third inning with two outs.

MVL is at Springfield on Thursday, while Nicollet is at Mountain Lake Area on Friday.

Starting at $4.65/week.
