NEW ULM — Dozens of classic car enthusiasts rolled in at the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce Car and Bike Roll-in Saturday.

Participants included Jay Miller of Mankato and his bright yellow 1973 Dodge Dart Sport with black striping.

“Back in the 1970’s I helped my brother when he raced it at North Star Dragstrip,” said Miller. “He did pretty well with its 340 cubic inch V8 engine and four-speed transmission. It’s got 87,000 actual miles. I just put new brakes on it. That’s about all I’ve had to do beside change oil and fluids.”

Leon and Mary Ludewig brought their two-tone purple and dark gray 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria to the roll-in.

“I found the car in a used vehicle flyer and went to Nebraska to get it,” said Ludewig. “My son Chad helped me take it all apart and put it back together. We just showed it at the Minnesota Street Rod Association Back to the 50s Weekend at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.”

The Langs have back seat pillows depicting photos of the Ford as it was when they bought it and after it was rebuilt including reupholstering the seats.

“It’s got overdrive and runs pretty nice with a 1984 302 V8 engine and overdrive. About the only thing it doesn’t have that I’d like to have is power steering,” he said.

Mark Dauer of New Ulm drove his orange 1970 Dodge Challenger RT/SE with 383 Magnum V8 engine and air conditioning.

“I wanted a sports car with air conditioning. They were hard to find in that era. I found the car online in Ohio and went down there to get it,” he said. “A 72-year-old man had it but had to sell it because he and his wife decided they wanted a recreational vehicle more than a Dodge Challenger.

Dean Lindquist of New Ulm drove his 1955 Cadillac Series 62 to the roll-in but said his favorite car is his 1950 Mercury.

Ed McCormick of Wilmington, N.C. came to the roll-in while touring the United States in his late model Subaru.

A retired Newark, N. J. chief financial officer, McCormick said he and his wife moved to Wilmington from the Newark, N. J. area after he retired.

“All I do is travel,” he said. “My girlfriend and I are booked up for travel through 2028. She is with her girlfriends this week, so I headed out on the road. I want to see all 50 states. I’ve seen 39. I plan to see six states next week. This is my first time in Minnesota other than the airport.”

He plans to tour Alaska, Oklahoma, Washington and Oregon in the near future.

The New Ulm Chamber-sponsored roll-ins continue on Minnesota Street downtown from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on the second Saturday of August and September. For more information, visit www.business.newulm.com/events/calendar.
