NEW ULM — The first inning on the mound for New Ulm Eagles pitcher Jack Albrecht against St. Peter Tuesday was nothing to write home about as he gave up three hits and two runs.

But after that two-run first inning that was aided by a New Ulm infield error, Albrecht was lights out.

He allowed only a third-inning single and struck out six as the Eagles scored eight unanswered runs to down St. Peter 8-2 at Mueller Park in a Big South Conference baseball game.

Albrecht went 6 2/3 innings before leaving due to the pitch count in earning the win.

Connor Bjorling took the loss for St. Peter. He went three innings and was charged with seven runs.

Maddox Mortensen, Carter Lang, Jaden Drill, Ayden Jensen and Lucas Suess each had two hits for New Ulm.

New Ulm coach Kevin Briggs said that Albrecht pitched well in the game despite a two-run St. Peter first inning.

“That first inning was not on Jack,” Briggs said. “We had an error and errors lead to momentum and the error kept the inning going and they get their runs.”

St. Peter got their runs in the top of the first on a one-out infield error, singles from Jake Moelter and Drew Simonette and an Ashton Voss double.

“I was not hitting my spots in the [first] inning,” Albrecht said. “And my curveball was not going good. But then I started to find my spots and it went good from there.

“I slowed down a little bit and started taking deep breaths and found the spots to hit the strike zone.”

And the Eagles offense came alive.

New Ulm knotted the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Mortensen and took second on an Albrecht infield out. He scored on a Carter Lang single before Lang came home on a Jaden Drill single.

The Eagles then plated four runs in the second. Singles from Ayden Jensen, Jace Schaefer and Lucas Suess, a walk to Ryan Wiltscheck, an error and a Lang base hit had the Eagles ahead 6-2 after two innings.

“After the first inning we started to score runs and we were all going good then,” Albrecht said.

Briggs said that when you play with a lead it puts pressure on the other team.

“And our hitting always comes around this time of the year — we are putting some good swings on the bat — but we are still trying to find our lineup. And outside of that first inning, we played good defense.”

New Ulm added single runs in the third and fourth innings on a Suess RBI single and a bases-loaded walk.

Albrecht said that the Eagles are starting to come together as a team.

“We have a good future come playoffs,” Albrecht said.
