Eagles take 8th at true team gymnastics

ST. PAUL — The New Ulm gymnastics team finished eighth out of 10 teams at the state true team gymnastics meet on Saturday.

New Ulm had a score of 166.95 on the day. Watertown-Mayer won with a 180.025, followed by Mankato West (178.55), Big Lake (178.05), Melrose (176.325), Worthington (174.2), New London-Spicer (172.45), Becker (170.2), New Ulm, Perham (166.325) and Detroit Lakes (162.575).

It was the first time since 2007 that New Ulm qualified for the event. True team is different in that they count all five scores and they only do team awards. No individual awards are given out.

“I was very impressed with our performances,” Eagles coach Kortney Peterson said. “Ella Freiderich was injured in gym class on Friday and unable to compete. Olivia Eckstein was also about to make her way back into the varsity line up but went down during warm ups.

“The girls filled in line up spots and remained calm and confident. Eighth place was a great spot for us to land.”

Boys’ basketball

Cathedral 63, MLA 62

WINDOM — New Ulm Cathedral edged Mountain Lake Area in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Saturday.

Jevan Wilfahrt led Cathedral with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Sam Knowles 19 points and 11 rebounds and Jake Finstad had 13 points.

Cathedral hosts Wabasso on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 60, Edgerton 51

WINDOM — Sleepy Eye defeated Edgerton in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Saturday.

Erizen Traconis scored 13 points, had 16 rebounds, six assists and five steals. Marcus Martinez finished with 22 points and five rebounds and Caden Evers had 9 points.

Sleepy Eye hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday.

Springfield 78, Adrian-Ellsworth 43

WINDOM — Springfield defeated Adrian-Ellsworth in boys’ basketball action on Saturday.

James Coffland led Springfield with 21 points and Carter Hillesheim had 17 points. Brendon Buerkle finished with 12 points.

Springfield is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 86, Windom 63

WINDOM — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Windom in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Saturday.

Trent Steffensmeier had 23 points and five assists and Kaleb Wait had 20 points and nine rebounds. Will Walter had 20 points and Carson Domeier had 13 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds.

St. Mary’s hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Tuesday.

Men’s basketball

MORRIS — The Martin Luther College men’s basketball were unable to slow down the hot-shooting University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) Cougars in a 114-60 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference loss on Saturday.

The two teams went back and forth to start the game with the Knights trailing 18-17, but the Cougars began to take over with a 16-2 run in the first half on the way to a 51-31 halftime lead.

Jack Heichelbech led MLC’s scorers with 14 points. Jacob Price and Joseph Hirsch each added eight points.

MLC (2-15, 0-7) returns to action on Friday when it travels to Bethany Lutheran College.

Women’s basketball

MORRIS — The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team’s comeback attempt came up short in a 68-60 loss at University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) in UMAC action on Saturday.

The Cougars took an early 18-13 after the first quarter, built their advantage to 36-22 at the half following a strong second quarter.

MLC fired back in the the third quarter, out-scoring the Cougars 20-11 in the period to cut the deficit to 47-42 heading into the final quarter.

The Knights continued to cut into the deficit, trailing by only three points at 49-46 with eight minutes remaining thanks to a pair of Anna Treder free throws, but that would be as close as they could get the rest of the way as UMM executed down the stretch hold them off and score the win.

Treder led the way for MLC on offense with 13 points to go with 10 rebounds. Maya Price and Emily Rothfuss added 12 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench.

MLC (5-11, 2-4) hosts North Central on Wednesday.
