Schommer hits milestone

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral’s Emily Schommer recorded her 1,000th career set assist and New Ulm Cathedral cruised to a 25-21, 14-25, 25-19, 25-19 Tomahawk Conference volleyball win over crosstown rival Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.
Schommer entered the match needing just nine set assists and she got it in the first set with her team leading 23-19.
“It feels great, it’s such a proud accomplishment, I love all of them to death and we come in every day for practice and we just work so hard together,” Schommer said. “These memories wouldn’t be right without these people behind me.”
The Chargers got a bit of redemption in the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead early and they never let the Greyhounds back in. A tip by Emma Rodewald and a block by Sam Dalueg put MVL up 14-8 and the Chargers cruised to the second set victory.
Cathedral jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the third set, but the Chargers closed the gap and made it interesting late, but Cathedral hung on to take the 2-1 lead in the match.
“There were moments tonight where I thought ‘wow, we’re unstoppable,'” MVL coach Amy Pearson said. “We kept the momentum and really hustled on defense, they’ve got some very good hitters.”
The Greyhounds won the fourth set to improve to 17-3 on the season. They host Springfield on Tuesday and the Chargers are at Nicollet Monday.
For Cathedral, Sydnee Helget had 20 kills and Lily Brennan had 20 digs and 13 kills. Schommer had 37 set assists and Megan Haala had 23 digs and six kills. For MVL, Dalueg had 13 set assists and 12 digs and Abbie Riederer had 11 kills and 11 digs. Ella Schlei had eight kills.
