NEW ULM — When you are playing for a share of the Tomahawk Conference baseball title, you need to play well.
Tuesday afternoon, with a chance to share the conference crown with Minnesota Valley Lutheran with a win over Wabasso, the Greyhounds made too many physical errors and too many mental mistakes.
Wabasso scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 6-6 tie and went on to down the Greyhounds 9-7 at Mueller Park.
Adryen Tietz got the win for Wabasso (10-4). Isaiah Riser took the loss for the Greyhounds, who finish their regular season 10-4 in the conference and 16-4 overall.
Carter Benz led Wabasso with four hits.
Noah Wilmes had three hits for the Greyhounds, including a first-inning, two-run inside-the-park home run. Sam Knowles added two hits.
For the Greyhounds and coach Alan Woitas, it was simply a case of making too many miscues.
“We made too many mistakes and good teams take advantage of those,” he said. “Wabasso took advantage of every mistake that we made. Those mistakes ultimately cost us the game today.”
Rieser’s two-run home run in the first inning was short lived as the Rabbits came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning off of Knowles with an error playing a big part in it.
Cathedral grabbed a 5-3 lead after three innings.
Wabasso scored a run in the third and then two more in the fourth on an error and a Matt Evink sacrifice fly.
Cathedral saw two scoring chances go by on two mental mistakes. In the fourth inning, a run was taken off of the board when a Greyhounds’ runner missed third base and was called out. And in the fifth, a Cathedral batter missed a suicide squeeze sign and had a runner tagged out.
“We missed third — we missed a squeeze and we had an error in the first inning that blew up into big inning (for Wabasso),” Woitas said. “We missed a cutoff in the fourth inning that coud have cut down a run (a two-run inning for Wabasso). Those are five or six runs and that is a big difference in the game.”
Cathedral mounted a threat in the seventh inning, scoring once before Carter Benz secured the win.
Woitas said that while he is concerned about the loss, he is more concerned about how his team played Tuesday.
“We did not lock in mentally as well as we should have so hopefully we can use this as a learning experience.”
