Hulke shuts down Chargers

NEW ULM — Marah Hulke got her 100th strikeout of the season on Tuesday as Nicollet downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 4-0 in nonconference softball action.
Hulke achieved the milestone in the fifth inning against MacKenna Dressel. Hulke earned the win, pitching seven innings, giving up no runs on four hits, with one walk and 13 strikeouts.
“Marah has worked so hard,” Nicollet head coach Brianne Eldred said. “She is a great leader who pushes the girls constantly.” Eldred said Hulke was called up as a seventh-grader and started out at second base.
As a team, the Raiders have not given up a run since they gave up two runs in a loss to New Ulm Cathedral on May 17.
Hulke opened the game with a lead-off double to left field. She stole third and she scored later on double by Hayley Selby, making it 1-0 Nicollet.
Nicollet’s Brooklyn Bode was hit by a Becca Kuck pitch in the top of the fourth inning. She moved to second on a walk to Selby. Bode scored on Olivia Whitmore’s single to center field for a 2-0 Raider lead. Selby scored later on Josi Hansen’s single to left field for a 3-0 Raider advantage.
Leah Bode drew a walk in the top of the sixth inning for Nicollet. She went to second base on a wild pitch, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on an MVL outfielder error for a 4-0 Nicollet lead.
Kuck took the loss, pitching seven innings. She gave up four runs (three earned), struck out four batters and she walked five batters. Kuck also hit one batter.
Nicollet finishes the regular season with a 15-5 record while MVL ends with a 3-15 mark. Both teams await the start of the upcoming playoffs which are schedule to take place next week.
