Cathedral sweeps GFW

NEW Ulm –The New Ulm Cathedral remained perfect as the Greyhounds defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 5-4 and 18-1 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference softball action at Harman Park.

In Game 1, Cathedral had to battle back for the win. The Thunderbirds came back and scored five runs to tie it at 5-5in the top of the sixth.

Jenna Hotovec belted a lead-off triple to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sarah Mohr flied out which resulted in Hotovec scoring Cathedral’s winning run.

The Thunderbirds did all of their damage in the sixth inning. Baleigh Peterson and Lexi Rettig drew back-to-back walks. Jessica Willegal single to center field scored Peterson and Rettig. Willegal scored on a Greyhound error for 5-3 score. Jaedan Nachreiner doubled and she scored later on a Cathedral error. Morgan Aylsworth reached on an error and scored the tying run on Rylee Sabo’s right field single.

In the bottom of the second inning, Megan Haala reached on an error. She scored later when Alex Hornick walked. Lily Franta reached on a bunt. She scored later for a 2-0 Greyhound lead. Lily Brennan’s single scored Hotovec, who had reached earlier on a single. It was 3-0 Cathedral.

Sydnee Helget belted a double to left field in the fourth inning. Helget scored on Hotovec’s double, making it 4-0 Cathedral. Mohr reached on a fielder’s choice and she scored later on Lily Brennan’s single for a 5-0 lead.

In Game 2, the Greyhounds cruised past GFW, scoring 18 runs. Megan Haala was the winning pitcher. She gave up one run, two hits and she struck out four batters.

Kiah Helget went 3 for 4 with a double, four RBIs and she had three runs scored. Emily Guggisberg was 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Cathedral (11-0, 10-0) will travel to Springfield (8-4, 6-3) on Monday. GFW (3-7) will host Sleepy Eye (2-4, 1-4) on Friday.
