NEW ULM — Mankato East scored two runs in the bottom of the first and added single runs in the next three innings to top New Ulm 6-3 Tuesday in the Section 2AAA Baseball Tournament elimination bracket semifinals at Mueller Park.
Owen Stenzel got the win for East (16-10). He went the distance and allowed three runs on seven hits while fanning three.
Candon Briggs took the season-ending loss for New Ulm, which finished at 15-10.
Briggs — one of four pitchers used by the Eagles in the game — went 1 1/3 innings and was charged with three runs. Collin Forstner entered in relief of Briggs in the second and got a double play to end the inning. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Mitchell Hopp pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run, while Owen Castleman pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on three walks while striking out two.
Carson Hart had two hits for the Cougars.

Hunter Larson had a triple for New Ulm, with Dirk Haynes and Kyle Albrecht each driving in a run on doubles.
“Our kids battled today,” Eagles head coach Jeff Ferrell said. “[Stenzel] threw pretty well for them and he had us off balance. We did have runners in scoring position (in the third inning), but we just could not get that hit when we needed it.”
Carson Hart was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead East, while Koltin Kolbinger was 2 for 4.
East plated two runs in the first on a two-run single from Braxton Wojcik.
The Eagles cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second when Levi Hopp singled with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on an Albrecht single.

But East responded with single runs in the next three innings to build a 5-1 lead after four innings.
“We had a hard time stopping them,” Ferrell said. “And it is tough to get down and we did not have that punch today.”
New Ulm cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth when Briggs singled and later scored on a hit from Albrecht.
East added a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Eagles plated a run in the top of the seventh on a Larson triple and a Cohen Domeier base hit.
“We had a great year,” Ferrell said. “Our kids responded well and it was a pleasure to coach those kids.”
Mankato West defeated Marshall 4-3 in eight innings of the section semifinals Tuesday to advance to the section finals this Thursday in New Ulm. West will play the winner of the elimination bracket, needing just one win to advance to state, while the elimination bracket winner needs two wins Thursday to clinch a state berth.
