Area roundup: MVL shuts out GFW

FAIRFAX — Minnesota Valley Lutheran picked up its second win of the season with an 11-0 victory over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday in five innings.

Caleb Carlovsky shined both on the mound and at the plate for the Chargers. He pitched four innings, allowing one hit and striking out one for the win. He also went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Josh Gieffer and Kaiden Hammerschmidt had two hits each and Leyton Brau had a two-run double. Brau also pitched the final innning for MVL.

MVL (2-0) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday.

Springfield 8, Sleepy Eye 7

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield baseball team moved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-7 win over Sleepy Eye in Tomhawk Conference baseball action on Monday.

Dylan Batzlaff got the win in an inning of relief for the Tigers, striking out one. Isaak Lothert led the Tigers with two hits, one being a double, and two RBIs, while Ashtin Johnson had a double and three RBIs.

Kadon Strong took the loss for the Indians in 2/3 innings of relief, giving up two earned runs. He also led the Indians at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Erizen Traconis also drove in two for the Indians and had a hit.

Springfield hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday, while Sleepy Eye hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.

Cathedral 9, Wabasso 4

WABASSO — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Wabasso 9-4 on Monday in Tomahawk Conference softball action.

The Greyhounds (1-0, 1-0) were led by their winning pitcher Kiah Helget, who had 13 strikeouts and allowed four walks and three hits in the win. She also went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs. Also for Cathedral, Lily Franta had an RBI and two doubles, while Kenzie Hose was 2 for 3.

Sarah Franta took the loss in the circle for Wabasso, with four strikeouts and two walks allowed.

Cathedral hosts Springfield Thursday, while Wabasso hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Thursday.

Springfield 23, Sleepy Eye 2

SLEEPY EYE — Springfield crushed Sleepy Eye 23-2 in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Monday.

Courtney Wendt, Brittany Strum and Jaeli Richert each had two hits for the Tigers and Sturm had three RBIs.

Richert also pitched four innings, allowing four hits and two runs. She struck out five.

Springfield is at Cathedral on Thursday and Sleepy Eye is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.

SEU boys 172, GFW 223

SEU girls 300, GFW Inc.

WINTHROP — The Sleepy Eye United boys golf team was led by Carson Erickson’s 40 as it defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday.

Logan Martin shot a 47 for GFW and Toby Weiss shot a 42 for SEU.

On the girls’ side, Liz Schwint shot a 57 for SEU.

Prep Softball

Nicollet 18, Cleveland 2, 5 innings

Randolph 8, Nicollet 2

CLEVELAND — The Nicollet softball team went 1-1 on Saturday, beating Cleveland 18-2 before falling to Randolph 8-2.

Against Cleveland, Hayley Selby got the five-inning win in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk. Olivia Whitmore and Brooklyn Bode each led Nicollet with three hits apiece, while Bode added six RBIs.

In the loss to Randolph, Marah Hulke took the loss in seven innings, giving up seven earned runs and striking out four. Selby and Madi Kramer each had a hit to lead Nicollet’s offense, with Selby’s hit being a two-run homer.

Prep Track and Field

MVL boys’, girls’ teams take 2nd at LCWM

LAKE CRYSTAL — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys’ and girls’ track and field teams each finished second out of four teams at a Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial meet on Saturday.

The MVL boys finished behind LCWM/Nicollet for second with 90.5 points, while the girls finished second behind LCWM/Nicollet with 91 points.

For the MVL boys, Christian Edwards took first in the 100-meter dash (11.43), Joey Goeglin took first in the 200-meter run (25.24), Nick Bleick took first in both the long jump (18-06) and triple jump (37-07), Bryant Karstens took first in the shot put (38-10) and Augie Fliszar took first in the pole vault (10-06). The boys’ 4×200-meter relay team also took first (1:46).

For the MVL girls, Clare Fischer took first in the 1,600-meter run (6:06.11) and the 800-meter run (2:56.25), Kaylee Hunter took first in the 300-meter hurdles (57.77) and the triple jump (32-00), Ann Schwartz took first in the pole vault (8-00) and Kylee Walter took first in the high jump (4-08). The MVL girls’ 4×400-meter relay team (4:57.48), 4×200-meter relay team (2:06.58) and 4×100-meter relay team (58.35) all took first.
