Area roundup: New Ulm vaults past Waseca, Witkowski has career night in MLC loss to BLC

NEW ULM — The New Ulm gymnastics team vaulted to another win on Thursday in Big South Conference action, defeating Waseca 137.225-128.24.
New Ulm was led by Kayla Goblirsch, who finished first all-around (36.325), first in the vault (9.25), first on the beam (9.25), first on floor (9.55) and second on bars (8.275).
New Ulm also had Olivia Eckstein take fifth all-around (26.375), second on the beam (8.85) and second on floor (9.175). Emily Guggisberg took sixth all-around (25.9) for New Ulm and finished third on both the beam (8.65) and floor (8.9).
New Ulm is at St. Peter on March 6.
Boys’ Basketball
GHEC/T/ML 79, Cedar Mountain 40
TRUMAN — Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther defeated Cedar Mountain 79-40 on Thursday night in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.
Cedar Mountain was led by Cade Schiller’s 11 points, while Nick Freitag added 7.
The Cougars (5-8) are at Sleepy Eye on Monday.
Girls’ Basketball
BLHS 62, Sleepy Eye 40
HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Sleepy Eye 62-40 on Thursday night in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.
The Indians were led by Kadence Hesse’s 19 points and eight rebounds, while Kaydince Thoms added 12 points and five rebounds and Brea Mertz had 11 rebounds.
Allison Milbrandt led the Mustangs with 21 points.
Sleepy Eye (6-6, 5-5) is at Cedar Mountain on Monday, while BLHS (7-4, 7-3) hosts Central MN Christian on Monday.
Cleveland 50, Nicollet/Loyola 47
NICOLLET — Cleveland held off Nicollet/Loyola 50-47 on Thursday in a Valley Conference girls’ basketball game.
Hayley Selby led the Raiders with 15 points, while Marah Hulke added 10 points. Josie Hansen and Brooklyn Bode chipped in 9 and 8 points, respectively.
Nicollet (6-7, 5-6) hosts Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday.
Prep Wrestling
Wabasso 34, Ortonville 33
WABASSO — Wabasso eked out a 34-33 win over Ortonville on Thursday in prep wrestling action.
Gabe Martin (145), Chase Irlbeck (152), Ty Altermatt (160), Carter Benz (170), Ezekiel Olson (195) and Sam Welch (220) picked up wins for the Rabbits, with Altermatt and Welch collecting pins.
Wabasso is at a Jackson County Central triangular on Saturday.
Women’s Basketball
BLC 95, MLC 75
NEW ULM — Despite a career night for Emily Witkowski, Bethany Lutheran College downed the Martin Luther College women’s basketball team 95-76 on Thursday.
Witkowski set an MLC single-game scoring record with 37 points and became the fourth player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Erika Gosch added 13 points for the Knights, while Emma Nelson added 8 points and six rebounds.
MLC fell to 2-9 on the season and 1-5 in UMAC play in defeat.
