New Ulm defeats Minnesota River

NEW ULM — New Ulm scored four, third-period goals to break open a 3-1 game as the Eagles improved their Big South Conference-Leading record to 9-0 and 9-2 overall with a 7-1 win over Minnesota River Tuesday night at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Noah Wilmes collected two goals — his seventh and eighth of the season — with Braxten Hoffmann, A.J. Arneson, Jack Albrecht, Josh Gulden and Jacob Berg all getting goals.

Blake Soukup had two assists with Albrecht, Jace Addy, Arneson, Hoffmann, Luke Steffensmeier, Wilmes, Gulden and Jacob Berg each getting helpers.

Eagles’ goaltender Joey Gag had a relatively quiet night stopping 11 of 12 Minnesota River shots.

New Ulm outshot the Bulldogs 36-12 in the game.

Minnesota River got the first goal of the game when Brady Sowder beat Gag at the 7:25 mark on an unassisted goal and a 1-0 lead.

But that lead lasted less than a minute before Hoffmann evened the game up with a shot from the high slot that beat Bulldogs’ net minder Logan Moe at the 8:15 mark.

The goal tied Hoffmann with Keagan Schiro with nine goals.

The Eagles, who host Luverne at 7 p.m. Thursday, got a power play goal from Berg and added a score from Arneson at the 13:13 mark for a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

Jack Albrecht’s goal at the 2:37 mark of the third period started a goal barrage by the Eagles.

Wilmes followed that up with a goal 33 seconds later and a 5-1 cushion.

Gulden’s goal at the 5:13 mark upped the lead to 6-1 before Wllmes’ second goal on a New Ulm power play closed out the scoring at the 7:33 mark.
