Area roundup: Gillis hits milestone but Cathedral falls to BOLD, St. Mary’s girls clinch Tomahawk title

BOLD 59, Cathedral 53

BIRD ISLAND — New Ulm Cathedral’s James Gillis scored his 1,000th career point but BOLD defeated Cathedral 59-53 on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Cathedral was led by Chris Knowles with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Gillis added 9 points, three rebounds and five assists.

MVL 72, WEM 70

WATERVILLE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night.

For the Chargers, Dunwa Omot finished with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jace Marotz had 15 points and five rebounds while Kyreis Harrison and Mason Cox each finished with 11 points. Jacob Norris scored 10 for the Chargers.

Grant McBroom scored 22 points to lead the Bucs and Nick LeMeiux scored 14 points.

MVL hosts Martin County West on Saturday in a rescheduled game from Monday.

Springfield 96, St. Mary’s 78

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield clinched a share of the Tomahawk Conference title with a victory against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

It’s the fourth straight year that the Tigers have earned at least a share of the conference title.

Mitchell Buerkle led the Tigers with 20 points and Decker Scheffler scored 15. Nolan Hovland scored 14 points and Ivan Hovland scored 10. Dylan Rubey and Jake Rosenstengel each scored 11 for the Tigers.

Carson Domeier led the Knights with 25 points and Nick Labat finished with 13 points. Trent Steffensmeier scored 11 points and Kyle Goblirsch finished with 10 points.

Springfield is at St. Clair on Friday and St. Mary’s hosts Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Friday.

Cedar Mountain 95,

BLHS 74

HECTOR — Cedar Mountain’s Trey Peterson-Juhl scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Cougars defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Chris Dow scored 23 points and Caden Kleinschmidt finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars.

Cedar Mountain is at MACCRAY on Friday.

Nicollet 59,

T/ML/GHEC 56

TRUMAN — Nicollet defeated Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain 59-56 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

With the win, the Raiders won the Valley Conference championship.

Nicollet was led by Shane Stevensen with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Riley Hulke with 18 points and eight assists and Ben Radke with 8 points and six rebounds.

Nicollet (11-1) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Madelia 73, USC 71, OT

WELLS — Madelia defeated United South Central 73-71 on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Madelia was led by Ja’Sean Glover with 41 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two assists and Kurt Lugo with 14 points and six rebounds.

Madelia (9-14) hosts Edgerton at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Girls’ basketball

St. Mary’s 71,

Springfield 58

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s won the Tomahawk Conference by defeating Springfield on Tuesday night in a conference matchup.

St. Mary’s finished the conference season 14-2 while the Tigers finished 13-3.

Madison Mathiowetz led the Knights with 24 points and Sydney Windschitl 16. Reagan Severson finished with 12 points.

For the Tigers, Sydney Hauger had 26 points and Maddy Digmann scored 13. Brooklyn Sturm had 9 points for the Tigers.

Springfield (20-5) hosts Nicollet/Loyola at 7 p.m. on Monday in a Section 2A playoff game and St. Mary’s hosts the winner of New Ulm Cathedral and Cedar Mountain at 7 p.m. on Monday for a Section 2A playoff game.
