NEW ULM — Kenzie Latzke scored her 1,000th career point to lead Sibley East past New Ulm Cathedral 61-33 on Tuesday in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

Latzke reached the milestone when she made a 3-pointer at 5:59 of the first half. She hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to achieve the all-timer scoring leader for Sibley East. Latzke finished with 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. Audrey Parrot added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Lily Beneke added 12 points.

‘We’ve been waiting a long time for this moment,” Wolverines head coach Ryan Kahle said. “She’s the player who gets us going. Without her, we get stagnant and we don’t do what we should on the court.”

Claire Olson passed the ball to Emily Schommer who scored for the Greyhound’s only lead of the night. Jaden Kmetz tied the score with two free throws on the Wolverine’s first possession of the game. Franata’s 3 tied it at 5-5.

Sibley East started pulling away from Cathedral. It put together a 10-2 run for a 38-19 Wolverine halftime advantage.

“I was happy to get it (the record),” Latzke said. “It was extra special and it was cool.”

Latzke was referring to the recent passing of her grandfather. Coach Kahle said it was an emotional moment for everyone.

During the second half, Sibley East continued its success using a strong defense, solid rebounding and taking advantage of Greyhound turnovers. It was able to find open players who either scored or kept a possession alive rebounding and trying it again. The Wolverines outscored Cathedral 23-14 in the second half.

Lily Franta led Cathedral with 19 points.

Cathedral (2-23) will play at Cedar Mountain on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A Tournament.
